GunVault MV500 Compact Handgun Safe with No-Eyes Keypad – Pistol Safe with Anti-Pry Steel Construction, Backup Key, and Foam Interior for Nightstand or Vehicle Use

I was initially a bit wary of purchasing this product based on some of the older reviews here on Amazon (& the obviously out-dated photos offered here - this model has a tubular key lock on the front). But after reviewing the specs & photos on the GunVault web site I ended up buying the MV500-STD from my gun dealer to secure a weapon in my bedside table. Let me tell you - it fits the bill! If you plan on carrying it around, you'll need to add a small towel to keep your items from clunking around as the padding is thick, but not enough to pin a full-size handgun & magazines in place. This unit is large enough for my Glock 17 & three 17-round magazines. While the buttons are a little "mushy" feeling as indicated in a few of the reviews here (soft rubber), I only have a mis-press infrequently, & only because I set my code to use multiple fingers simultaneously at one point - it is sometimes difficult to apply the same amount of pressure on 3 or more fingers at once while standing directly over it (think of the angle needed to type on a computer keyboard). I have not had this issue when practicing from a prone position in bed, which is my primary use for this equipment. Practice is important to ensure that you'll be able to use ANY safe at a moment's notice. This unit is easy to program virtually any combination of buttons you'd like as your combo. The option to program a simultaneous multi-button push and being able use any button more than once during a combination make this unit decently secure. A pair of tube lock keys are included in case the battery fails at some point, but the unit does have an indicator light which will blink red to indicate that a battery change is near. I've been using the same set of alkaline batteries since July of 2010 (the date of this review is 5/3/2011). The indicator light will also acknowledge button presses (by blinking green with each press), will indicate a bad combo attempt (with a red light), & the unit can also be set to beep & buzz along with the lamp - but this is, thankfully, something that can be disabled. If a bad combo is entered too many times (4 or 5, I believe) it will disable button presses for a few minutes - another time the included keys would come in handy. Plus, it will tell you if someone has attempted to gain access with a bad combo (think children). Again, practice using the safe just like you should be doing with your weapon, because your life may depend on it! I use the combination multiple times a day as I move my weapon between heavier storage (when away for a while) & the GunVault. The included security cable has a plastic sleeve over it & is fairly thin, but it is anchored nicely in the unit & would require one to have a heavy cable cutter to take the safe. The unit does have pre-drilled holes in the bottom to mount it more securely. I've read other's reviews saying they thought they could crack it open with a screwdriver or whatnot, but I notice none of them say they've been able to do it! Heavy gauge steel & decent construction make this an item to have when you need to secure your weapon (or valuables) for the short-term. While a heavier safe is a must when leaving the house for a day, this unit is great for storing a weapon while you're in the home or nearby. I trust the GunVault MV500-STD to do it's job, & I plan on purchasing another one soon (this time, from Amazon) to secure a carry weapon in my vehicle as needed. ___________________ UPDATE - 2/16/2014 I did follow through by buying a second MV500-STD for use in the car, and it worked well...for a while. By about the -second year- of strictly car use, accessing it nearly every day (couldn't carry at work, so it was used it at least twice a day during the work week), one of the buttons started intermittently not responding (light wouldn't flash to acknowledge a press). I thought this might be due to the batteries running down so I upgraded to lithium AA cells - but the button kept getting worse. After bringing it inside for a while and working with it, I determined that the second button from the left was failing. I reprogrammed the code to not use this one and it works as well as before, but this has given me pause regarding electronic locks. If I do need to purchase another safe like this, I will go strictly mechanical but with a key back up as I'd rather carry a key than worry about momentary lapses of not remembering a code. The second unit with its three working buttons still works well, even in the harsh cold of the Minnesota winters, and the lithium AA cells that I put in during 2012 are still working. CAVEAT: The original safe that this review was based is still in use in my home and still works fine - it has had a good amount of use and I did upgrade the batteries to lithium AA cells when I did so for my vehicle unit. Again, I do keep a key available to me as a backup, but I still trust this unit to serve its purpose. *Some may ask why I'd trust something like this with such an important safety-related duty - Even before I purchased my first firearm in 2010, I thoroughly researched and considered as many aspects of this journey as I could fathom before stepping in. The keyed backup was an important requirement for the safes, and the emergency access process was thought out considerably well. I have backup defensive measures in place to help in situations where I may not be able to open a particular safe quickly. --I would offer that, barring a reasonably redundant defensive plan or if you have the particularly important task of ensuring that children cannot gain unauthorized access to your firearms, you may wish to defer to a solidly built mechanical safe for your security needs.--

I purchased the MV500 so that I could safely and securely store my weapons in my SUV (no trunk) when I will be entering a building where Concealed Carry is prohibited. The center console, or underneath the seat is not considered secure storage under state law. You have a big legal/liability problem if your weapon is stolen from your vehicle because you were negligent and it was not properly secured. The MV500 is also great to secure valuables (Radar detector, GPS, etc) when you Valet park. The MV500-STD easily fits a 1911 .45 ACP, a widescreen Garmin GPS, and a Radar Valentine Detector. The unit is very easy to open with one hand using the combination lock, and has a backup key lock if the battery dies. To secure valuables, you simply wrap/loop the included steel cable around a front seat attach point, and slide the cable end into the cutout on the side of the safe. When you close the lid, the safe is secured to the fixed point on the vehicle. The cable could be cut with large bolt cutters and some time, but the chance of smash and grab type thefts is greatly reduced. It's also smart to hide the safe under the seat, or on the floor covered with a jacket, etc. The safe has a great anti-tamper feature that will let you know with a beep, and flashing red LED if an incorrect attempt to open the safe has been made since you locked it. Easily busts curious Casino Valet's! I have used the safe daily for 2 months, and I haven't yet discovered any negative aspects to owning and using it. Completely satisfied at this point! It is TSA approved for Airline travel too.

I like the products but they don’t last. I guess if you are happy with 10 years of life from a safe, then buy it. I had issues with it losing my combination a few times....I never trusted it to open when I needed it. I had my security alarm go off in the middle of the night recently, the only time in 10 years of owning this thing....tried to open it ....and it failed! I’m disappointed. I replaced the batteries....but 3 buttons stopped working. Microvault has text technical support?🙄 Text message from tech support......🙄 “Hello, We are sorry to hear your MV500 Gunvault Has Failed! It's possible that the button contact has collected dirt and humidity causing it to Fail. I will recommend to do some cleaning and residue remover as DW40 and allow it to rest for 24 Hrs! Attempted after with a fresh 9v Battery Duracell or Energizer. Contact us if issue persist!” “Just Remove the Battery, and then apply enough WD40 around the buttons Gaps wait for 10 t0 30 minutes then push and hold the buttons down and move them in a circular motion! after that left the unit facing down for 30 minutes so the exes of DW40 can be drained Out the Unit then install the Battery and try!” “I am Really Sorry this Issue Occurred to you, Unfortunable Since the safe model you own it is 2009 I am afraid It's currently out of warranty further service is unavailable! I had wanted a quick access gun safe for quite some time and finally decided on the MV-500 due to the smaller size and the price. I didn't want the larger ones because I planned to keep it in the nightstand drawer and the top loading design of this unit permitted that. Had no issue programming my own code in and so far so good. I had read some other reviews about Gunvault products failing after some time and eating batteries. Ive had the unit for about 5 months now and had no such issues. I DO open the unit pretty much every night by entering the code, letting it click open then I keep the nightstand drawer half open till the morning then I just push it closed again. The other day I was moving some stuff around and spilled a half full glass of soda all over the place, much of which spilled directly onto the Gunvault and down into its buttons! I wiped it all off right away and to my relief, not much liquid if any got down into the keys. Perhaps since they are rubber there is some sort of protection to keep stuff out of them? Some did get down inside the safe itself and I had to remove the firearm and dry out the foam padding but other than that, no issues and I would definitely get another GunVault product again The only thing is I wish Gunvault would spring load the door so it pops all the way up when its unlocked (but Im sure that would add to the price). Honestly, the way I have it now down in a nightstand drawer and pulling the door up is a little awkward. I can imagine in those precious seconds going to unlock it and trying to pull the door up only to let it slip off my fingers and closing itself shut again (Yikes!!) Again, if its tabletop or on a dresser this wont be much of an issue but if you want to keep it in a nightstand drawer like me its not ideal. I have thought of a way of building my own spring mechanism do to this but just have to find the time and right materials and it would also take some of the internal room away. Speaking of room, I usually keep a Glock 19 with rail mounted light inside but occasionally I also throw in my little Sig P238 STILL in its IWB holster when I don't feel like opening up the big safe and I know I may be going out again. Despite its small size, it can hold two smaller guns if you arrange them right way. Because the door closes way to easily I can only give it 4 out 5 stars but other than that its a great product to keep your firearms out of the little hands.

I spent hours reading reviews looking for the perfect gun safe. The MV 500 caught my attention for its price, design, and size. There seem to be as many negative reviews as positive. Negative reviews, in general, I've discovered are submitted by whining schmucks who will find fault in anything. Negatives I read in reviews: 1) Difficult to set code. Simply not true. I'm a techno moron, and I set code in just a few minutes. 2) Difficult to install battery. It takes one 9volt. How hard can this be to install? 3) Noisy beeps. Not really, and if you don't like the beeps, there is a button to mute them. 4) Easy to break into. Yes and no. Are your kids or nosy guests gonna break into it? Nope. Would a burglar? Yep. But the MV500 is designed for keeping out kids and nosy guests, not burglars. 5) Too small. Nope, not true. I can get a full size colt .45 1911 and a S & W .380 comfortably in it. This is a nice product and will fulfill its purpose. I will be purchasing at least one more.

As a handgun owner, my concern is for the safety of others and myself. The last thing I would want is for someone to injure themselves or someone else with my handgun. I want to feel safe while I sleep at night knowing my handguns cannot be accessed and used against me. This vault easily holds a .38 special or 9mm with extra mags. There is still room for additional items such as a taser, knife, or cell phone. The size makes it easy to fit into a kitchen or vanity drawer, and it has predrilled holes to fasten it securely in a drawer or on a shelf. You can make up your own combination and it has a mute feature so you can open it discretely. There is also a tamper feature which disables access for two minutes after three wrong combos and you can tell whether someone has tampered with it. It has a nice egg crate foam cushion inside to protect your valuable firearm from scratches. It even comes with a cable to secure it safely to your vehicle seat mounts if you are a CCDW permit holder. It is made of heavy duty metal and the hand-print combo pad makes it easy to open in the dark or under stress. It comes with keys as a back-up in case you forget the combo. Nice unit and priced fairly.

The safe does give you a nice and quick way to access your gun while keeping it safe from my kids. It works well. I have not had one problem with my safe not opening when I put a new 9 volt battery in it. I put it on silent so that if there is ever the need to open it quietly an intruder won't hear the beep of the buttons being pushed. It still has a green light flash so you know you are hitting the right code. It holds my Sig sp2022 plus three extra clips just fine. A nice size overall. The construction seems very durable and the buttons on top are accurate and not "mushy" as some have reported. I chose this safe because of its portability as well. I take my gun to the range with this safe. Overall very happy with this.

I received my safe quickly and it operates as expected. The keypad and actuation work properly and reliably. You do need to interact with the buttons in a deliberate manner for example press one, then the next , then the next if you try to do it like speed typing or slur you will have to enter it again. All in all excellent!! I like you can have a tone on or off for the button press (there is also an indicator light) that provides feedback. The small case is rugged enough and includes a security cable to wrap around any solid object in your car or home. There is no doubt a saws-all or with some serious work you could open this thing and gain access, but for me it allows me to keep my pistol close at hand and not worry about a child or even adult grabbing it and doing harm. Also perfect for the auto when entering a non-CC zone. 4 AA batteries are easy to access and change. Love the portability and the simple programming of the access code..allows for changing frequently.

wish there was a heavier spring to pop the lid. I keep mine at bedside and practice opening. if your lazy with your hand and have too much pressure it relocks the lid. recently I had a strange occurance of it outright not unlatching, but after some poking at the mechanism works great. just wish the lid was more spring loaded to open.

Now I don’t usually write a review but this gun safe is completely low end. The electric unlock no longer works and I’ve used it a max of 5 times in the two weeks I’ve had it. I can still open it with the key which is good but not what intended it for. I would not advise this product to a friend.

Secure and strong will hold a full size 1911 with some extra room nicely
