The Medicine Wheel: Earth Astrology

I met the Authors!
I met Sun Bear and was part of a Medicine Wheel weekend in Peterborough, NH in the early nineties. It was held at a YMCA camp in the middle of a forest abutting a lake. Friday night there was a welcoming at the mess hall. When I waked in Wind Waban asked me what my birthday was and when I told her she turned to the people in the hall and shouted. "Our sturgeon is here!" and every applauded. I was in shock, but Wind Waban said not to worry she would explain everything to me. I was to be part of the Medicine Wheel which was constructed in a ceremony on Saturday afternoon. It was a roped off enclosure with stones set about for the participants. The rope surrounding it had two purposes. To define the wheel and to hang medicine prayers which you wrote on a paper and folded it up in a felt bag and hung it on the rope. The wheel had one opening in the east where we all entered, took our positions and explained what we brought to the wheel. The Otter was wonderful. He came in sliding on his back with his feet and hands waving in the air. Everyone laughed. The last to enter was Great Spirit who was invisible and took the center position of the wheel. The door to the east was closed and the wheel was constructed. There were workshops during the day and a men's and woman's sweat lodge in the evening. During the day we all had time to talk to Sun Bear who was a very open and loving person as was Wind Waban and all the teachers. Sunday afternoon the wheel was deconstructed, a large fire was made with the branches from the sweat lodges and other wood. Hundreds of little prayer bags were thrown into the fire and the smoke carried the prayers up to Great Spirit. Sun Bear closed the retreat giving a warm speech thanking all of us for sharing the weekend with him. I was very sorry to hear of his passing several years later. This book holds his teachings and his love for humanity and the planet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Good book for Wasichu to study.
Subtle differences from the Sioux to the Arapahoe, Cheyenne perspective. Animal spirit guides and colors of the Wheel are inconsequential when looking at the big picture of the Circle of Life! Most people today will never know what their animal reflections will be. (Or even experience a vision quest). Through books are the only way to preserve the true ways today.

Astrology for everyone
This is a simple-to-understand book that will help you understand the energies of astrology, even if the "usual" astrology (Libra, Capricorn, Scorpio with houses/rising, etc) doesn't resonate. This book weaves the wisdom of Indigenous Americans through birth charts using clear language and animal alignments. This is a great book especially if you are struggling to understand astrology, but want to study the language of the stars to help you understand the people around you. The author is especially respectful of the learnings of the Indigenous tribe medicine from which he learned. Highly Recommended.

This was a replacement copy.
This purchace was to replace my original copy that had been sadly lost during a move! I had no idea that the book had been updated with modernized drawings. I was given the original copy by my shamen during a long period of time that I was out of balance with myself and my surroundings, reading it showed me the path to restore health and serenity to my journey through life. I used it as a reference book to maintaining good spiritual balance, and to help others do the same! The lose of my original copy was tramatic to myself and those who had become accostomed to referencing it's pages. I recently came into some unexpected income and was finally able to replace my beloved Medicine wheel earth astrology book. This is not a book of horoscopes it explains the relativity of nature's influences on us in regard to our birth. It also aides in choosing items for one's own medicine bags, and natural health! I am again peacfully at balance!!

Gives new perspective to astrology with rich, native wisdom
There is so little available on Native American spiritual practices that I was happy to find this gem. I later discovered that the author has been criticized because his teachings are not actually so close to tradition. However, as a an astrologer (since age 14), I found Sun Bear's offering enriching, with a perspective that is closer to the earth and at the same time more subtle than common astrology. This book is a treasure to readers interested in the subject, who can enjoy it with an open mind and shunning fundamentalisms.
