I bought this for myself to replace an older decorative candle bulb, and the biggest thing I noticed was how natural the light feels. Many LED candle bulbs are perfectly bright but can look a little harsh or lifeless, especially when dimmed. This one does a much better job of recreating the warm appearance of a traditional incandescent bulb, making it a great choice for living rooms, dining areas, or anywhere you want a softer atmosphere. The DimTone feature is what really sets it apart. Instead of simply getting dimmer, the light becomes noticeably warmer as the brightness is reduced, giving a cosy amber glow that feels much more like older filament bulbs. If you already have a compatible dimmer switch, it makes evening lighting far more pleasant than a standard LED that stays the same colour regardless of brightness. The diamond style lens also helps distribute the light evenly, avoiding obvious bright spots when the bulb is visible in open fittings or decorative wall lights. It looks good both switched on and off, which is important if the bulb itself forms part of the room's design. The main trade off is price. For a decorative fixture where ambience matters, this works very well. Real-World Impressions: I found this bulb best suited to a lamp or chandelier where the visual warmth of the light is the priority rather than raw brightness. The incandescent effect is genuinely impressive and is the standout reason to choose this over cheaper alternatives. That said, the price is noticeably higher than comparable LED candle bulbs, and for applications where the dimming warmth effect isn't needed, there are far more cost-effective options available. Verdict: A well-made, visually appealing bulb that excels at replicating the warmth and character of incandescent lighting. The DimTone effect is its strongest feature and makes it worthwhile for the right decorative setting. Just be prepared to pay a premium for what is, in practical terms, a fairly dim bulb.

Most dimmable LED bulbs dim to a cooler, flatter version of themselves. The DimTone technology in these Philips MASTER bulbs does something different — as you dim, the colour temperature shifts warmer, replicating the way a traditional incandescent filament behaves. The effect at low levels genuinely approximates candlelight in a way that standard LEDs simply don't. For chandeliers, decorative pendants and any fitting where ambience matters more than task lighting, this is the bulb to buy. The clear candle form factor looks elegant both lit and unlit in an open fitting, which matters more than people realise until they've had an ugly bulb sitting visible in a decorative chandelier. 5.5W for a warm glow output that feels equivalent to a much higher wattage incandescent is the energy efficiency case made quietly and effectively. E14 small Edison screw is the correct fitting for most candelabra and chandelier applications. Philips MASTER range quality control is consistently good — smooth, flicker-free dimming with no buzzing at low levels, which is where cheaper dimmable LEDs often let themselves down. Worth every penny over a basic LED alternative.

I've attached photos of the Philips Candle effect bulb versus a diffused LED bulb. The colours aren't correct of course, but you get the idea, suffice to say the difference is pronounced. The Philips is more attractive and eye-catching, but also perceptually brighter if you look directly at it as the light is concentrated and could be somewhat piercingly over-bright if used at a near distance in front of your face, for instance, so situationally you may need a dimmer when you didn't before. I think due to that effect you could plausibly use it hidden by a shade to emulate the old style filament bulbs as well, unfortunately due to the candle rather than rounded shape it wouldn't fit in any of my lamps so I couldn't tell you for sure. All of my bulbs are Philips, almost entirely Hue, and they've been universally a cut above the rest. This one looks to be no different in quality.

I like the design of this candle style bulb and it gives off a pleasant warm light. The lens style works well to provide even lighting whilst keeping a clean, clear bulb design. Considering the bulb is from the ‘Master’ range the specs are very average, especially given the price point: * The CRI (important for natural colours) is only 80, all my other “Master’ series bulbs are 90+. * At 85lm/w the efficiency is very average, good bulbs now have over 120lm/W. * It has an R9 value (red colours) of 1 which is very poor. The dimming performance is very good with no visible flicker. It’s not a bad bulb, just not the best at its price point, and therefore not the best value.

Great. It was the only bulb that didn’t flicker in my dimmer lamp. Other bulbs (even supposedly flicker free ones), all flickered, but not this.
