Sivaraman takes viewers on a rhythmic voyage through Mridanga Cintamanih , a 7 DVD set. I found in Umayalpuram Sivaraman a management guru, who has the skills to motivate a team, says Khanthan. One hundred and thirty hours of shoot canned into a 7 DVD pack that runs for 22 hours! Sounds like a mega serial? It is of a different genre that has been documented for posterity says S.B. Khanthan, who takes credit for the script and direction of Mridanga Cintamanih, the seven DVDs where Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman takes the viewer through a voyage of logically sequenced mridangam lessons (Umayalpuram style). They were released recently by Swathi Soft Solutions. Apart from being an accomplished mridanga vidwan, I found in Umayalpuram a management guru, who has the skills to motivate a team. It was evident during the long hours of shooting and editing schedules. Incredible is his energy level, and he would always be punctual on the sets. You can find his involvement in every frame, says an enraptured Khanthan. Inspired by Khanthan s narrative, we met Umayalpuram at his newly renovated residence in Alwarpet to know more about the DVDs and his music. The catch phrase of the entire conversation was divine dispensation. --The Hindu NewsSivaraman, a Legend CHENNAI: As his fingers trace the intricate patterns on the mridangam, the audience watch and listen in disbelief at how despite the speed, each syllable is traced with crystal clarity. Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman is a legend serving the cause of the art for over six decades, said N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu. He is not just the Maradona of Carnatic music, but a combination of Maradona and Pele, he said, explaining that though Mr. Sivaraman is a genius like the maverick footballer, he is also disciplined and structured like Pele. He was speaking at the launch of Mridanga Cintamanih, a set of seven DVDs featuring Mr. Sivaraman and his art, presented by Swathi Soft Solutions here on Monday. Commending the effort at creating the instructional DVDs, Mr. Murali said that as the Gurukula practice does not exist any longer, technology helps in preserving our glorious treasure. Kerala Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby said that when great mridangam players are enumerated in the field of Carnatic musicians, the first name would be Palghat Mani Iyer s and the second would be Mr. Sivaraman s. Carnatic vocalist Madurai G.S. Mani and Bharatanatyam exponent Padma Subrahmanyam were present. --The Hindu NewsUMAYALPURAM SIVARAMAN TALKS The making of my new self-learning DVDs It s been my long cherished dream to share the nuances of mridangam playing and techniques that I had learnt from the great masters to the future generation. I have always felt the audio medium( normal music CDs) is necessarily not the best suited for this, for the simple reason that unlike vocal music, the students of mridangam have to see and understand fingering techniques which is a very key aspect of perfecting the art of mridangam playing. I strongly felt they have to see and learn, rather than just hear or read from books. It is with this objective and intent, I have been waiting for the right opportunity to create learning DVDs. Very recently, the opportunity presented itself and I agreed to do a project with Swathi Soft Solutions. It s been a mega project as I wanted to cover all aspects of mridangam techniques and playing. We started with putting down in paper every aspect that everybody needed to know right from basic lessons to accompaniment to concerts. The effort required was huge. We almost recorded for over 120 hours, day and night, with technicians, my disciples and the director S.B. Khanthan. The editing in the studio of all the relevant portions that subsequently we did, was indeed a brilliant team work. The rain in Chennai over the last 15 days did not stop us from working 24×7 in getting this project right in time for the 2008 music season. This project called Mridanga Cintamanih ( A treasure trove of Rhythmic Lessons) is over 22 Hrs long! It has been captured in 7 DVDs. I have broken it into 4 levels Level1 Beginner s guide, Level 2 Advanced exercises and techniques for proficiency, Level 3 Gaining expertise for solo renditions, Level 4 Road to success in concerts( Vocal & instrumental music). I believe I have included in these DVDs almost everything that I have learnt from my great masters who I have seen, learnt and experienced all through my career over the last 60 years. --The Hindu News
