Loose Parts: Inspiring Play in Young Children (Loose Parts Series)

I had the honor of taking several classes by Lisa Daly and finally got my hands on her book. She is a wonder for the field and I can feel her throughout. The book is full of child development knowledge bits and how engaging loose parts can be. The pictures are absolutely inspiring and beautiful. I have also found it easy to read as my daughter plays at my feet, but she often loves reading it as much as I do because of all the pictures! Highly recommend for anyone interested in deepening children's play.

Loose Parts is similar to a Reggio based learning approach and is not only a collection of useful materials, but the setting up of provocations or setting the stage for the classroom to be a third teacher. The environment and loose parts help teach as they draw the children in who will want to know what is going on. The children are presented with some loose parts, a story or staging, and work to construct solutions to the presented problem. They engage in higher level thinking, creativity, and the discovery of multiple possible solutions. The actual materials or loose parts may be reconfigured for use in new provocations, sorted, save, and reorganized for other problem solving activities. It is STEAM (STEAM means Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning!STEM is like STEAM without art, but art elements are included in this book.

I have wanted to move this direction in my center for years and this book has helped everyone get the idea. The picture are great and the explanation or the whole concept has helped the teacher see how this is a wonderful concept.

This book as a lot of pictures that can be inspirational. However, it doesn't have much by way of planning or implementing loose parts play into an existing curriculum or classroom. I have found that just setting loose parts out, no matter how attractively, doesn't necessarily attract young learners. Still looking for something with more information.

We purchased 22 of these books for our contracted child care homes. They were a big hit with the family child care providers. The information is great and easy to understand and apply, and the pictures are fantastic. I would highly recommend this to any preschool program.

I was first drawn to the photos of the loose parts. When I slowed down to read the author's text, I found another level of interesting, thought-provoking information. This book has been a great addition to my professional library and has been already shared with several others who have been equally stimulated by the content. Thanks, Lisa.

This book is a Teacher's dream come true! the thoughtfulness that the writers put into it blows me away! Not the mention the pictures. Really am enjoying this book. I work with 0-5 year olds and we are on a tight budget. I have noticed the children do get bored with the colorful plastic toys. I use these ideas for the 3-5 age group, where they are not putting things in their mouths.

Loose parts are essential for children's development. This book is a great, easy way to learn about loose parts: what they are, and why they are so beneficial. Beautiful colourful photos of the parts on their own and in use. Fosters lots of great ideas.

This book is a perfect blend of theory and practice. I'm feeling so inspired! I've love loose part play for a while now. I have a much better understanding of why it's so important in the early years!
