Old Turtle (Lessons of Old Turtle)

Love the storyline and the simple yet important values it shares.

This is a delightful book with a great message for all of us. The story centers on the questions of "who is God and where is God". This book is a classic. If you do not have it, I cannot encourage you enough to get a copy. You will not regret it. Another book by Douglas Wood is Old Turtle and the Broken Truth. Another wonderful story worthy of a place in your library as well. Both of these books embrace the idea that each and everyone of us, as well as each and every creature, and the earth on which we live are all intertwined in this construct called life. While both of these books are fables, the essence of the message will differ based on one's life experiences. For children an interesting story but for an adult an opportunity to find inner peace.

Makes you really think about how humans are ruining this world. We all forget animals were here first and how destructive people are and unnecessary!!

The message in this book is so powerful. Written on a level that is easy to read for even young readers, but in such a way that the older you are the deeper the meaning of the words becomes. The artwork is beautiful. I bought it for my 90 year old Grandmothers birthday and she was so moved she cried after reading it. She keep it by her bed and re-read it over and over for the rest of her days. I've also given it as a gift to kids as young as six, teenagers and young adults for graduation gifts and to adults to for birthday gifts or baby-shower gifts. It is universally loved by all.

We've been giving a copy of this book to each new baby in our lives for more than twenty years. Though the book is spiritual, it is appropriate for folks of all (or no) faith tradition. The art is extraordinary -- it captures the attention of little ones, and the imagination of older kids (up to oh, mid-50s). The text is lovely, thoughtful, and richly tender. Some reviewers suggest that the ideas are too complex for most kids, but I disagree. It is precisely the idea that no one has a monopoly on G-d that kids understand better than most adults. At a time when people are all too often mistaking their own preferences for the preferences of G-d, Old Turtle is a wonderful reminder that G-d is more than we can imagine, and that humans are "a message of love from God to the earth, and a prayer from the earth back to God."

I got this for my mom and when she died I gave to my brother. I wanted one to replace it. Love the book

I bought this book when my kids were little (25 years ago), then bought it again recently to donate to my church’s new library. The book’s message is permanently relevant!

delightful story, but illustrations although beautiful to adult eyes, I think might not be so appreciated by a young child, too faint and wishy washy.Would be quite a nice story to read to a child at bed time
