A truly admirable musician tells what it's like to be a star
I dig biographies and am also a fan of Rush since the early 90s. Upon the announcement of the band's reunion for a tour in 2026, I came across an advertisement for this book by Geddy himself. I had already read Neil Peart's Ghost Rider when it came out, and was eager to know more. In many places of this book Geddy hints that he had much more to tell but was constrained by the publisher's space limitations, so the narrative is very brisk and a bit too condensed. Impossible to get bored reading it. We feel his great sense of humour and healthy self-criticism, and the chapters about his tragic family past and the passing of beloved bandmate Neil are truly moving. Many tales of wild parties with plenty of drugs, too - Rush almost fooled me with their longstanding public image of somewhat immaculate gentlemen. What's genuine is the friendship among the members. It's especially inspiring the part where the band stubbornly decided to pursue their ambitions against the record executives' wishes, incurring in serious risk of failure, and made their breakthrough 2112 album as intended. Don't expect a technical breakdown of each song or album, this book isn't like that. It's a full scale autobiography, humbly packaged as a memoir. Now, if Alex ever wants to write something...
