Anne Frank's Diary: The Graphic Adaptation

Beautiful artwork to match the Diary of Anne Frank.

The critics who assail this book as "pornographic" don't know what they're talking about. They take the more sensitive adult stuff out of context and even misunderstand Anne's more intimate thoughts and those thoughts' portrayal in this book. (For example, she wasn't "a lesbian"- she was mostly straight, as the book's discussion of past people she loved or had crushes on shows.) The artwork beautifully illustrated Anne's thoughts and feelings and ideas on a variety of topics, including the one about the "two Annes", a look at Anne's story "Cady's Life", and that time they had to eat endive all the time. I admit I was disappointed not to see the "S.P.V. (if you please) gas" sign on the toilet door or van Pels (van Daan)'s stork joke in there, though. But overall, well done! (Recommended for age 12-13 and up.)

I've read the book several times, and this adaption was a great way to visualize the story. Very well done and does justice to Anne's sad, powerful tale.

Buy this book before it gets banned. In case you forgot, there is a part where Anne mentions confusing feelings about another girl. This graphic adaptation makes the entire read a little more enjoyable IMHO. Maus from Artie Spiegelman is also great for further exploration.

This book had a very good and recognizable art style

I actually bought this for my niece for Christmas this year, but when it arrived I just briefly glanced through it and I must say it’s a very beautifully done graphic novel of Anne Frank’s Diary. Today, graphic novels are becoming more and more popular with kids and I thought this would be better for her instead of the classical book because she loves art and manga. I was skeptical because I never want to disrespect or lighten certain subjects because this is history and it’s important. I am happy that this gives young people a new way to read Anne Frank’s story as well as learn about the Holocaust in terms they can understand.

The negative reviews of this book are amazing in their lack of awareness that what they object to -- the sexual content (which is illustrated very discreetly, never explicitly) -- is all taken directly from Anne Frank's diary, which was originally censored by her father. The full version has been widely available for years now, and is considered the definitive version. The Anne Frank foundation approves of the full version, and authorized this adaptation. You have every right to object and be offended, but realize that what you object to are Anne Frank's own words, thoughts, and feelings -- not content added by later editors or adapters. If you wish this teenage girl to be innocent of thoughts about her body and desires, that's your fantasy being imposed upon the factual history of her diary.

Una edición muy bonita, colorida y atractiva. Merece la pena. Una forma de acercar la lectura a aquellos niños a los que no les llaman los libros por ver demasiada letra. Una buena forma de hacer una transicion entre comics/mangas a libros.

Our 10-year daughter is quite historically-aware and somehow has a keen interest in the second world war. In addition, she loves to learn about women that stand out. And she is very much into graphic novels. So this was the perfect Christmas gift. The book is filled with beautiful art and is a spectacular adaptation of the Anne Frank story, that adds another dimension to the narrative. The style and colouring match the late 1903’s and war years. Our daughter already read an Anne Frank biography before so she knew the story and details (and was horrified by it). This graphic novel however it doesn’t not address nor depict the Bergen-Belsen camp part of her way too short life. It is an abbreviated version of the dairy but its captures the essence very well with the artist perfectly rendering some of the Anne’s thoughts and perceptions that she trusted to Kitty, her diary. It is a gripping story about growing up in unusual and grim circumstances, while the humanity shines through though Anne’s wit and grumpiness. The The book and its stunning art gives gloom impression of Anne’s circumstances, it is a touching visualisation of event and her thoughts, the boredom and despair. You will get cross section part of the secret annexxe “achterhuis” and god explanation fo several events during the war as well. In contrast to many comics there is a fair amount of text, but it is highly readable and a page turner. This is simply very powerful story telling. Very well done.

Excelente libro. Las ilustraciones son espectaculares, el empastado y encuadernación son de muy buena calidad. La historia ni se diga, es excelente. El detalle es, que por ser un libro ilustrado, las historia es corta y resumida; sin embargo no le quita el mérito a ésta versión, es muy buena en realidad.

Really nice book, amazing colorful illustrations. I've lived in Amsterdam for a couple of months and I didn't visit the Anne Frank house as I didn't read the book (I get bored easily). But after reading this one, I seriously regret not visiting. For people who don't like to read much, this is a perfect medium, which gives you a fairly good insight into the story and emotions of Anne Frank. It is a must buy!
