These have a finish that likely won’t allow an even marker coloration. That’s not to say a kid couldn’t leave marks on it.

I had not noticed any chemical smell or paint smell when playing with the blocks along with my grandson. When I read your question I went to the blocks and tried real hard to detect a smell of any kind but there was just no smell at all to them. Hope this helps.
