Barthes shares his passionate, in-depth knowledge and understanding of photography. Examining the themes of presence and absence, the relationship between photography and theatre, history and death, these 'reflections on photography' begin as an investigation into the nature of photographs. Then, as Barthes contemplates a photograph of his mother as a child, the book becomes an exposition of his own mind. Review: Really good book. - Great book. Highly recommended for photography enthusiast but do read the other books in the series first. Review: ... for those who not only frame snaps but also love to read photography as poetry and philosophy - A must read for those who not only frame snaps but also love to read photography as poetry and philosophy.

Excellent
I have an annual custom of reading/re-reading Barthes on flights every December/January. Last year it was Mourning Diary that piqued my interest. And this year, it is Camera Lucida, a book that Barthes was working on alongside the aforementioned diary. Just as sublimely Barthes as possible, Camera Lucida takes our common everyday perspectives out for a drive, makes us question our very perspective regarding images, and then brings us back to square one. Questioning whether we are indeed back where we began from. Barthes puts the question himself, that he attempts to establish a hypothesis that is already a theory. But then again, had Barthes not questioned the lucidity of the photographic process, we might just have had to contend ourselves with a Camera Obscura.

Must read
In the days of narcissism of selfies, this book is a counter point of photography. He talk of photographs as remnants even when he sees his mother or a little girl. The psychological approach is a must even if some reader may be a strong votary of photography.

For me, truly the saddest and deepest work by Barthes
Some very good reflections on Photography, essential in order to discuss the current developments of modern technology. No problem with shipping etc.

Nice thin and elegant pocket
I like this book. The paper they chose and the typo they applied are amiable. Otherwise there would be only the content make sense.

Tough read
Philosophical journey by author seeking a real picture of his mother. Lots of words to look up while reading.

Recommended reading for all Students of Photography
An in-depth philosophical and personal essay by Barthes on what makes a photograph remain in one's mind beyond the immediate short attention. It's made me look deeper to reveal the true "photograph".
