It's a meat tenderizer. Well, it tenderizes meat.
When my sister moved out, she took my parents meat tenderizer. We used to make Chicken Fried Steak regularly and she always loved just using our full metal meat tenderizer. Now 20 or so years later, I realize I have not had Chicken Fried Steak in forever and look to Amazon. I can't find the all-metal version but get this.So far it has been good, The wood handle and metal head do exactly as expected. I've pounded a few steaks and chicken breasts and it works as desired. It's called Extra-Large and Heavy-Duty. It seems similar in size to all I have seen and I am not sure if I would put this in a kitchen that is producing a dozen chicken-fried steaks a day, but for me I suspect it will be fine for a while.

Nice meat tenderizer, but the head attachment is slightly loose.
Nice meat tenderizer for the price, but the aluminum head was slightly loose on the wooden handle. It was that way, out of the box. I "tweaked" it, to get a secure fit. But, after my wife used it, the head became slightly loose again. I plan to do another kind of "tweak", and that should solve the problem.

DO NOT BUY! FILTHY ICKY THING should not be in a kitchen.
I paid $11 for a really poor quality mallet. First, the handle once had a sticker on it before I got it. It was peeled off but the sticky white residue was left behind. The wood is just barely finished so it is not protected against kitchen grim seeping into the wood. It is too light weight, so much so that you have to put your weight into the hit or the chicken breast won't flatten. The aluminum head is hollow and I did not know it. I popped the head of the mallet into a bowl of sanitizer water and went back 5 minutes to rinse and put away an the whole head was full of the sanitizer water. The water was warm, which caused the aluminum to expand leaving a gap between it and the wooden stick (no way should this be called a handle) that runs through it. I realize it cost $11 dollars but the one I have now, that has a short handle, came from Dollar General for only $7. I will keep this just to teach my kids a BUYER BEWARE lesson. They can have it for their Play Doh. I had my hubby drill out a drain hole right through the sucker so I can wash the Play Doh when it needs it. TERRIBLE.

Does the job.
I was looking for a meat mallet to replace an old, quite heavy one that I liked but was starting to corrode. The head of this is not as heavy as the old one, but the handle lets it do the job without having to hit *hard*. I mostly used the smooth sides to pound chicken breasts thinner so they cook evenly. Four vice five stars for the light weight only.

meat hammer
well. if you want to get all manly macho tenderizing meats,..THIS is the one for you. just the shear handling of this makes you feel like Thor himself. construction is great. handles great. this reminds those of us old enough to remember the hammer at the circus to ring the bell. you can really lay down the weight when you handle meats.

Well crafted and, as a cook, versatile. A good product and good value.
I like the broad faces and the faceted head featuring two grades of coarseness. The broad convex sides of the head are ideal for more delicate meats such as pork, veal and chicken.
