to purchase a bunch of useless trinkets, and party favors that will surely end ...
In the midst of our chaotic party planning, we completely forgot to pick up party favors. Rather than running to the local stores two days before our party (and not to mention, to purchase a bunch of useless trinkets, and party favors that will surely end up in the garbage for most households), we decided to order the DYO Wood Race Car as party favors because we've had great success with Melissa and Doug's products in the past. Amazon delivered this in two days, right in time before a birthday party! And let me tell you, the kids were so happy to receive this as party favors. These were an absolute hit as party favors. The kids were so excited to get them and they were even more happy once they were able to open the package and decorate/paint their little race car. Melissa and Doug products are always worth the purchase because their quality is outstanding. The paint was very easy to apply, and it dried fairly quickly (roughly 1 hour or so to touch). The paint was also easy to wash off, which is a HUGE plus for parents.I definitely recommend this as party favors! I will also note that even if you are not going to use these as party favors, I also recommend these as a great weekend arts and crafts project for your kids (for parents or schools). After your kids are done with this project, they will also have a really neat toy that they will be super, incredibly proud of it. Great product!

Great Little Activity
I got this for my 7 year old granddaughter - she loves to do art and craft projects. If I can't plan something for us, it's great to have a kit on hand. This one provided us with a pleasant time together - with enough process to engage her interest, but not so complex that it required concentration that precluded conversation. A large part of doing crafts together is the "together" part. She was able to do most of the work, but I did help in gluing the wheels to the axles. Since we had all evening, it didn't bother us to wait a bit - the instructions suggest 'hours' - before going on to paint after gluing the wheels. The same wait time is suggested before applying stickers to the painted car. We didn't wait hours for either, and had no problems, but I can imagine that if you're trying to do this with a party group that the wait-time suggested between steps might be problematical.Other reviewers have mentioned the paint as a problem. It does clearly state in the #1 instruction: "Cover a hard work surface with paper and wear protective clothing. Art supplies may not wash out of all materials." Yes, the paint is difficult to fully wash off hands as well. She did get paint on her shirt in a couple of places, and it did not respond to water, but did sort of flake so that we could pick it off.One thing that I haven't seen mentioned is the great little wooden tray in which this is packaged. It is smooth, painted - a wonderful bonus with this kit that we will put to good use. The instructions are on a label pasted to the bottom of it - clearly written and easy to follow. The white glue and paint were fresh, and there is enough left of both to use for other projects. After painting the car, my granddaughter used the paint on some Creative Paperclay (TM) sculptures she made last week. All in all, I am totally pleased with our experience using this craft kit. In fact, I've already ordered the larger car kit and one other Doug and Melissa kit. Hopefully, they will be the same quality and also packaged in those nice wooden trays!

Cute, fun and the price is right!
I bought 10 of these for my 3 year old's birthday party. Yup....I painted race cars with 3 year olds. It was hysterical and fun, slightly messy but no big deal with a little planning! I did open the boxes ahead of time to glue the wheels on the cars. The kits come with glue but I used some Elmer's Wood glue because I figured it would hold better. Everyone (adults and kids) had a blast painting them at the party and they made cute party favors for the kids. At five bucks a pop, it was totally worth it!

great fun for preschoolers
We got a train version of this as a party favor at a birthday party, and I thought what a great idea. We usually give away plastic stuff that I'm sure gets thrown away. This was a great, artistic activity for my son to do. He is 3 1/2 and really took his time painting all the parts. Then when it dried, he enjoyed figuring out how to put the pieces together and adding the stickers. It was a whole afternoon activity. The one thing is it is not a car/train to play with like pushing it around the floor as boys do. It falls apart. It is really just to paint and put together and then look at. It would be amazing if it actually held up well enough to play with, but for this price, just the activity itself was great. I will be giving this away at his next bday party and we will collect more of these for my son and I to do at home together!

Great fun for family bonding and giving a sense of accomplishment to a kid!
My husband and I purchased a bunch of these for our Christmas toy drive at church. We thought it would be a great activity for a child to do with his/her family...make it, then play with it. Also gives the kids something to do and a creative outlet. It also gives them a sense of accomplishment. I think this little kit is adorable, not overpriced (at least the sale we got!) and would be great for a little boy to have. We also bought a couple other themes. And would purchase again!

Fantastic Success!
I purchased this kit for our Son and Grandson to do together. Melissa & Doug crafts are the best. They offer a child a success story and life lessons all in a little box. Everything you need is in the box. They paint the car and use glue on the axles, which provide a lesson in patience waiting for the paint to dry and the glue to set. Easy assembly too. My Grandson is 3, and this is the second car kit he has made. I love the smile on his face when he says, "I made that car".

Cute, but small, art project for toddlers!
I bought this decorate-your-own wooden race car set for my 2.5 year old to have a little art project. He loved painting the car and helping assemble it too. It's a nice little art project, but it would be nicer if the car was just a little bigger. It's pretty small, but for around $5 I didn't expect too much. All-in-all it was fun for him!
