How long are the mounting screws? My desk top is rather thin and I'm worried that the screws might be too long and come up through the surface.

Sorry I already installed it and never measured them. If I remember correctly, they came with a large set and a smaller set. In reality, a quick trip to the hardware store for screws that wont poke through (or a few washers for spacers) would be all you need if you’re concerned. As for the item, my coworker likes how it adjusts though I didn’t like how it didn’t easily glide in and out. I may add some grease to some of the components.

How close does the mounting bracket need to be to the edge of the desk so the keyboard will be positioned correctly?

I set the forward edge of the mounting bracket 2.75 inches back from the edge of the desktop. This allows the back edge of the tray to just clear the desktop when open, and the front edge of the tray will not stick out when stowed.

My 60x24 desk has metal supports running side to side in the middle of the desk, leaving 9" for the track. Can I mount it turned side to side instead?

I believe that would work. I tested my tray, and it does rotate 90 degrees. So, if it were mounted sideways, it obviously would not "retract" under the desk....but it would slide side-to-side.
