Like masterpieces of art, music, and literature, great mathematical theorems are creative milestones, works of genius destined to last forever. Now William Dunham gives them the attention they deserve. Dunham places each theorem within its historical context and explores the very human and often turbulent life of the creator โ from Archimedes, the absentminded theoretician whose absorption in his work often precluded eating or bathing, to Gerolamo Cardano, the sixteenth-century mathematician whose accomplishments flourished despite a bizarre array of misadventures, to the paranoid genius of modern times, Georg Cantor. He also provides step-by-step proofs for the theorems, each easily accessible to readers with no more than a knowledge of high school mathematics. A rare combination of the historical, biographical, and mathematical, Journey Through Genius is a fascinating introduction to a neglected field of human creativity. โIt is mathematics presented as a series of works of art; a fascinating lingering over individual examples of ingenuity and insight. It is mathematics by lightning flash.โ โIsaac Asimov Review: School Teachers don't want you to know this one little trick that makes math fun. Buy this book to know it. - Phew! What a journey that was. From the Hippocrates of Chios to Georg Cantor. Dunham is a fantastic storyteller as well as a great mathematician. The book really brings out the true beauty and awe hidden in mathematics. Dunham starts by telling us about the life of the mathematician and the circumstances he lived in. This is a sure-fire way to get your readers interested. And boy does he do it well. His facts are sound and the biographies are well sourced. For the mathematics, well that is a very good aspect too! He has done brilliant work in presenting proofs in an organized and understandable way. Some have been dumbed down but I can live with that. These are not THE great theorems of math, some are more simple and elegant yet inconceivably difficult. Notwithstanding, the theorems that Dunham chose were excellent since it wasn't an easy task to find math that is common to every reader. Really the greatest book on math that I have ever read. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is bored by mathematics. Believe me, Math is truly understood can surprise you and give immense pleasure. This book has done that and I thank William Dunham for that. Review: By far the best book Iโve read in the popular mathematics genre. - Highly recommend this gem of a book for people who desire to appreciate the beauty of mathematics. Book reached me intact and in perfect condition.

Brief History of Maths
This book is going to open your mind. Imagine one genius created a theorem and so many geniuses born after him are going to investigate that theorem.

A good read
Great start, later b comes very complicated. May be the subject is not easy. But felt the authority with which the initial results were discussed, that was missing in thr later part of the book.

Freshly printed book delivered, but with slightly warped hard cover and stain on bottom edge
I ordered this book which was very influential to me the first time I read a copy from my local library back in 1992; this is one of my favorite books, and I decided to buy a hard cover copy from Amazon. The book came mostly in good condition, freshly printed, just 5 days before it was delivered to my home. I rate the Amazon service with 4 stars because the covers are slightly warped, and there is a stain (fingerprint?) at the bottom edge of the book. This was an unpleasant experience for me, I can't help but feeling a little disappointed and frustrated, but at least now I have my own copy of this great book (don't judge a book by its cover). All pages appear to be properly printed. Ordered on May 13th, 2022 from Amazon website, delivered to my home on June 2nd, 2022; printed in Monee, IL, USA, on May 28th, 2022.

Beauty
If to her grace, some female errors fall, look into her face and you will forget them all (Alexander Pope). And if mathematics is a science of enigma to you (and of enigmas, which of course it is), read this book and you will start to see, in parts even comprehend its beauty.

A Journey through the history of mathematical geniuses
This book has a quite interesting structure to it. Each chapter revolves around a specific mathematical theorem. The author then gives some backstory to the field of mathematics at the time, and then to the individual who happens to make a proof of this theorem. Then he presents the proof while trying to stay close to the original arguments, just presented in a somewhat modern way. I really liked this book. Especially interesting was the history and learning about these amazing intellectual giants. Even if you're not great at mathematics, I would recommend this book. If you're really weak at mathematics, I would possibly even recommend just skipping the proofs and simply reading the history. That's okay! For me, the first few chapters were the least interesting because they're mainly about geometry, a branch of mathematics that interests me less (Just personal preference). But even these chapters were great and the rest were just excellent! Highly recommended.
