A So, So Shaving Instrument...
Delivery of my new Spyderco Ulize G-10 was delayed by one day due to a carrier issue. Which is to say that the knife and accompanying items were delivered to my door one day later than promised. And that amounts to Amazon.com dropping the ball, which is about as far as Amazon.com has ever dropped the ball... Everything in life should work so well as Amazon.com!I can evaluate any purchase on several criterion including things like design, ergonomics, workmanship, comparative value, etc. I sometimes gain my initial impression by judging how a new purchase performs in a specific task, hence my headline for this review...Out of the box, and dry, my Spyderco Ulize deftly shaved the hair from my forearm. And while I found the handle quite comfortable for this task, I found the curved blade less than optimal for that purpose. Seriously, save your money and buy those disposable razors to shave your forearm hair! This is the 7th Spyderco knife I've purchased for myself or as a gift, and as in every case prior, I am impressed with it on every level. If you're new to the knife thing, open your new Ulize with extreme care, as it is absurdly sharp! This is the first time I've drawn blood with a new Spyderco knife... I was about to close my new Ulize and set it in the basket with my Glock 26, REACTOR Gryphon Watch, Fenix PD35 flashlight, wallet, keys, and cell phone. My thumb rested very lightly and absentmindedly on the blade, low where it hinges into the handle... A nearby door opened suddenly and must've slightly startled me, for as I closed the knife I noticed a brilliant, crimson streak blossoming on my thumb... I never felt a thing! Like I said, absurdly sharp! Scary sharp! The build quality, materials used, and comparative value of the Ulize is typical Spyderco, which is to say, excellent on all counts! The purchase price with a defaulted 3-day delivery via my Amazon Prime account was unbeatable! One thing I would mention, which may be considered a con by some, is that opening this blade quickly and safely, one-handed, is not a readily doable thing. Despite the signature "spider hole" which exists for that purpose, most people will not readily open this knife one-handed. But I knew that was a possibility when I made the buy, so I'm not complaining.I'm a big fan of the Emerson Opener, which is featured on several Spyderco Knives, but I recognize that there may be a practical limit to what size blade and blade design this feature can be safely used with... Again, I'm not complaining.By the bye, the Ulize is a wicked-looking knife, and quite beautiful in its own right. It is superlatively thin, and rests well in the pocket, in particular for such a large folder. The grips offer a tactile stickiness that I very much like. The curve in the cutting edge, which begins at the middle of the blade, causes the knife to somewhat capture and bite more deeply into whatever you're slicing, without requiring any extra down-force by the user. This is a key feature of the aggressively curved Spyderco Civilian and Matriarch knives, which are highly prized for self-defense and certain kinds of field use.If you're purchasing a carry knife primarily for self-defense, you may want to consider the Spyderco Civilian or Matriarch with the Spyderco Edge and Emerson Opener (the latter will likely be my next buy) available right here on Amazon.com. To understand the merits of the Civilian and Matriarch blades, see the Spyderco Civilian reviews and the You Tube feature dedicated to maximizing the effectiveness of the Civilian knife as a self-defense weapon; but be warned, it ain't pretty! The Ulize was named for its designer and after the German term for "police", and indeed, I selected the Ulize over the Spyderco Police 3 model.I would readily recommend the Spyderco Ulize for anybody considering a large folding knife for every day carry.RayB

Beautifully made, good EDC utility knife
I've been carrying this knife ever since it arrived a few days ago and it has performed admirably. The lock back mechanism is quite strong and the VG10 blade steel holds its edge exceedingly well. For its size, it fits quite comfortably in my pocket and opens smoothly enough. However, this is not a rapid "flick open" type of folder. The mechanism offers some resistance throughout the opening process, thus impeding instant deployment (great if you ever feared it opening in your pocket, it won't). Furthermore, the hole punched in it will definitely weaken its lateral strength. Therefore, do not get this if you entertain the idea of using your folders as an emergency crowbar, it will undoubtedly snap. Conversely, I wouldn't try splitting wood by taping on its back (I've seen this done with their military folder, but that design seems to welcome it). This sinuous blade is strictly for efficient slicing, which it does very well.I've read complaints about the difficulty of sharpening it. This is a valid point given the blades' geometry, but one that can be mitigated by using sharpening rods (Such as those provided in the Spyderco Tri-angle Sharpmaker). If I had to give a complaint regarding the design, it would probably center on its advertised purpose as a police utility knife. As stated, the locking mechanism is not meant for rapid deployment. Moreover, the blade has a very pronounced tip. Not the kind of knife I'd want to slip under someone's seatbelt to cut him/her loose in a pinch. I also tend to believe that, given its size, they could have added a glass-shattering stud for good measure (bottom of the handle). On the other hand, if it was really meant to be a combat knife, it shouldn't be a lock back and the thumbhole should not have bitten-off as much from the base of the knife as it does. Nevertheless, police uses aside; it's a great design for someone who wants a knife for the occasional garden or home use. I've pealed quite a few oranges with it already, cut plenty of rope, and turned a pile of boxes into trash bag sized chunks with little effort or loss of sharpness on the blade. The design fits my needs perfectly!

Another Spyderco Winner!
I own several Spyderco knives and this is yet another home run! Although I'm beginning to think that the Taiwan factory is producing the highest quality (although I was dead set against them, they are superb), the Seki City models have always been excellent. This is a rather large knife and despite the fact that it's more of a collection piece for me, it would make an excellent EDC if you like long blades. It is extremely thin. In fact, some reviews I've seen elsewhere considered that a drawback. I don't.... It's approximately the same thickness as the Caly 3 or 3.5 cf version and it buries itself in your pocket so well that I don't even notice it's there. Being a lockback, it doesn't have lightning fast deployment (unless you prefer the spydie drop method) but the lock is rock solid. I personally love Spyderco's lockbacks. A lot of people don't like recurve blades because they can be difficult to sharpen, but if you're like me and have the Sharpmaker, it's no problem. I personally like to be able to choke up and hold a knife with my index finger right next to the edge of the blade and I was happily surprised that the forward part of the handle has nice little flattened spot to rest your finger. It's not exactly as good as a full choil, but for short periods of time, it's more than adequate. I don't own the Police model, but I have handled the stainless steel version.... This knife is very comparable to that model, but I prefer this one because of the unique styling. Pick one up while it's still in production. You can't go wrong!

Double thumbs up!!
The best price for the legendary Spyderco Ulize in the UK, bar none! Fast delivery and a sharp knife.Although I'm not sure I'm in love with the Ulize personally, it lives up to its description to the letter. The G10 handles are grippy yet sleek. The lock holds the blade open with authority. The S curved blade maximizes the cutting capacity, while maintaining the subtle bananaization that keeps the point forwards in line with its brief as a counterpart to the defensive requirements of the Police (the knife not the organization).Although despite its origin with the police, to me it looks more like a big-brother to the Centofante 3.
