One of the Best Games of 2018
This is an atmospheric 2-D souls like game that presents a fun and challenging experience, and one that will keep you hooked until you finish it. The the art of this game is gorgeous with varied environments and many stylish characters/bosses to meet and face. Death's Gambit has a heartfelt story and many memorable moments throughout the adventure, with moments of seriousness to draw you into the world and moments of levity to break the tension. The soundtrack of this game is amazing and the voice cast is also very well done. This is a challenging game, but a rewarding one that rewards thoughtful and observant players. The game also presents great replay value with up to a NG+10 and Heroic Boss rematches that present the greatest challenge in the game that will test all your skills as a player. If you are a fan of Souls-like games or atmospherics 2-D Castlelvania style games this a must buy. You can see all the time and love the developers put into this game, and although it has some minor glitches, the overall experience makes this game a true masterpiece.

A Challenging and Rewarding Journey into the Realm of Death
As a fan of challenging games, I was eager to try out Death's Gambit for the PlayStation 4, and I must say that I was not disappointed. This game is an intense journey into the realm of death, where you play as a servant of Death himself, tasked with battling a variety of monsters and bosses to gain power and ascend to immortality. The graphics in Death's Gambit are absolutely stunning, with detailed environments that truly transport you to this dark, otherworldly realm. The soundtrack is also top-notch, with haunting melodies and intense battle themes that really add to the atmosphere of the game. But what really sets Death's Gambit apart is the gameplay. This game is hard, and I mean really hard. But the challenge is what makes it so rewarding. Every victory over a tough boss or enemy feels like a true accomplishment, and the feeling of progression as you gain new abilities and equipment is incredibly satisfying. The combat system in Death's Gambit is deep and nuanced, with a variety of weapons, abilities, and spells to master. You'll need to be strategic in your approach to each battle, carefully timing your attacks and dodges to avoid taking damage.Overall, I would highly recommend Death's Gambit to anyone looking for a challenging and rewarding action game. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're up for the challenge, it's an incredibly satisfying journey into the realm of death. So if you're looking for a game that will test your skills and keep you coming back for more, give Death's Gambit a try. It's a journey you won't soon forget.

Overrated Dark Souls Clone
Simply put, Death's Gambit is not particularly enjoyable. While not particularly bad, it is far from the "gem" some people have been calling it.Perhaps more than nearly any so-called "Souls-like" game, this borrows directly from Dark Souls. It does not hide that fact, and that in itself is not necessarily a bad thing. While the game does include certain unique features, it nevertheless is in essence a hack-n-slash. The first half of the game is quite enjoyable because the world is large, you start developing your skills, and there appears to be much to do. However, the luster quickly wears off - you realize the world is not particularly large. There are certainly secrets, but most of them you will have to walk back to. And, I literally mean "walk" to since there is NO warping/fast travel in the game! Okay, truth be told there is warping, and you will unlock it only after you defeat the second to last boss!! This idiotic move on the part of the developers is just one example of why this game with so much potential ultimately lands poorly.Graphics and music are decent, if a bit forgettable.Game control is respectable, your character for the most part moves well. There are some exceptions, sometimes your character will not jump at the correct moment, but overall that's not an issue. What is more of an issue is that you could be right next to an enemy and hit swing, but your greatsword somehow misses! On top of that, you will absolutely get hit! Enemies seem to be able to hit you often, and yet you will have to actually step back to hit them... that's just poor design.Bosses are very challenging. However, you can level-up which can greatly help. You will need to level-up and also level-up your equipment. Although technically the game has "armor", it does not reduce damage by any amount! In other words, if an enemy does 200 damage, it will do so no matter your level and level of your equipment! So what does leveling up do - it can increase your life, damage output, endurance, and a few other traits. There are quite a few other annoying features in the game which are NEVER mentioned. For instance, "willpower". The game purposely hides information on this stat, but it increases every time you die. Oh, and if you die enough, you'll never be able to get it below 100 which is a requirement for the "true ending". I consider such ploys cheap and they truly take the fun out of games. In Summary --Good====+It's a Metroidvania, those are wonderful games when done right.+Good voice acting.+Decent story, although you have little interactions and thus it just feels like an afterthought.BAD===-It's not a well designed Metroidvania.-NO WARPING (game should be advertised as "Prepare to Crawl" edition)-Too much convoluted mechanics that are never explained.-Decent story, although you have little interactions and thus it just feels like an afterthought.-Gets boring.Bottom LInes: There are far better 2D Metroidvanias/Souls-like games. The list includes - Blasphemous, Salt & Sanctuary, Hollow Knight, Axiom Verge, Bloodstained. The real problem with Death's Gambit is that it gets boring. Even just including some warping would have gone a long way. As it stands, I can not honestly recommend it.Final Score: 2.5 (rounded up to 3) stars or 50% -- much potential, but lost potential.

Hard, but super fun
This game is hard as hell. I find a lot of the times, the boss doesn’t really react to your attacks in the way of stranger and stuff. So I usually find myself using a special and running. Haha. But it’s a cool game, nice sprites, the story seems really interesting, and it is a souls like game. Bosses are big, areas vast. NPCs are cool and they come back to the hud area when found. Lots to do. Definitely recommend.
