To get down to it, these are damn fine knife scale blanks, out of the box The scales were almost pristine, I did some light sanding on one of the scales to use for a base for a 1/10 scale wakazashi sword, when finished this ironwood will be used for the base. There is no information on what wood type it is other than it is ironwood, a very loose definition at best, but I can tell you this, IT SINKS RIGHT TO THE BOTTOM IN A BOWL OF WATER, That's the ironwood test, if it floats it's hardwood, if it sinks, it's ironwood. The sum total of work to make this base involved sanding with a fine grit sandpaper, and the application of a few drops of linseed oil to seal the wood, and bring out the grain, That's all it required for a beautiful piece of wood. The wood is not stabilized or reinforced, it is a natural product, which is what I prefer, everything I use to make swords and stands is 100% natural materials, this Riakrum offering while not flashy is solid and of straighter grain, while not an exotic wood, it's still is beautiful, the color is a delicious chocolatey brown color when oil is applied. This type of wood you should not seal, these scales would look best in a natural state with fine sanding and hand rubbed oil finish, do with it what you will, but this is my suggestion, staining the wood or sealing the wood with lacquers or polyurethane will take away the natural essence of this beautiful wood.

Image used to get rid of these off -cuts of unusable scrap timber shows a beautiful wave grained hardwood with a chiaroscuro of a gold/brown similar to a cocobolo, or variety thereof. Received are 4 pieces of a quite bland, straight grain. I have better examples, closer to those depicted in my fire wood pile. Now it has fallen to me to waste a good chunk of my time prepping them and getting them over to the Post Office for return.

Leider völlig willkürlich zusamnen gestellt. Maserung nicht symmetrisch, da aus unterschiedlichen Blöcken. Schönes Material, keine Frage, aber ein (Damast-) Messer hat links und rechts eine Griffschale, die zumindest eine ähnliche Masrung haben.

2 of the pieces was cat from same piece but vertically, so I’ll make them fish style prayer beads in order to see and enjoy continuity of the wood. 2 of them were totally from different pieces.
