Marples M444/SB6 6-Piece Blue Chip Bench Chisel Set

I needed to replace my basic old no-name 3-piece wood chisel set, and tripped over this set completely by accident while searching for a quality upgrade. Before I finally bought a bench grinding wheel - something I’ve lived without too long - in 5he past ten years my local ACE service desk did a marginal job of sharpening, last time for $10/chisel. Idiot - I could purchase better basic chisels at ACE for less than that! Enter this lovely surprise set with IRWIN quality (actually the reputable Maples brand, which IRWIN acquired), with a beautiful and simple wooden case, twice as many chisels of much, much higher quality & sharpness - and when you take this all in, you laugh out loud about the low price! It’s one of those “what an I missing?” Situations. The answer is - you and I, we’ve been missing out! Best tool value I’ve run into this year!

These may not be the best chisels that money can buy, but they are definitely one of the best sets for a very reasonable price. The steel seems to be of a pretty good quality and the chisels are robust. Good value for money.

I've been using these Marples "blue chip" chisels since my apprenticeship 25 yrs ago, still have most of the original set, using a newer set now. I'm a woodworker by trade and use them daily, beaten on them with a hammer regularly, no problems. As any one will tell you all edge tools need to be flattened and honed before use, NO edge tools are sharp enough for use straight out of the box, spend some time now, approx 30-45 mins each, and you'll have years of use from these work-horse chisels.

These are my first set of chisels - I don't know how much I'll use them, so I want to keep the purchase cost reasonable. They arrived with an o.k. edge, but needed a little cleanup. The handles feel really solid. As for the box, well I really like to keep my stuff organized, so I like to get promo sets that come with cases - but this box was pretty [...]...The clasp on the front doesn't latch and the inside is just a flimsy molded polystyrene insert(same plastic they make disposable cold drink cups out of). I recommend getting one of the other sets without the box and either hanging them on pegboard or putting them in a toolbox drawer.

If you purchase this product, you will not receive the items in the photo and also described in the product description. The chisels in the photo are clearly Marples made in England with the squared handles. The product description even states as much, "The slightly squared special polypropylene handle gives a good, comfortable grip on this hard-wearing chisel." The product description even implies they are made in Europe, "Europe's most popular chisel." The ones you will receive are Irwin Chisels "by Marples" (Irwin bought Marples a few years ago) made in China with round handles. The part number on the product you will receive isn't the same either. I'm really surprised they can legally continue to sell them this way. The company blames Amazon for "switching" the photo (they gave me no rationale for the product description), and would take no responsibility. Furthermore, the box they came in (the same one I sent them back in) is very poorly made. Several of the slats that are supposed to hold the chisels in place were broken and/or came unglued, so the chisels were loose and banging into each other during shipment. I cannot write about the quality or functionality of the tools (I sent them back without using), but rather my 1 star is reflective of the purchase experience... flim-flammed.

The price makes this set an excellent value. The chisels come "sharpened" but they are not ready for use. Spend some time flattening the back and put a really sharp edge on these chisels. Substantial machine marks are present on the backs of these chisels and you'll need to spend a fair bit of time flattening the back. After that, it is smooth sailing. The chisels come with plastic edge protectors so the box is superfluous. But I kept it anyway to help organize my drawer. Also, the handles are surprisingly comfortable.

I’ve had these for five years and re-sharpened them many times even down to mirror finish on some of them. I use mine mostly on hardwood and they just won’t keep an edge and ding easily. Even though I put them in plastic end protectors after every use before I even put them in the box. They might be great for pine or something soft but they’re not hard and don’t keep an edge. I had always heard great stuff about maples, but since they were bought out by Irwin I just think there just using the name now. They are probably great for the person that has a hf set and wants an upgrade.

Used this brand before so I know they are great chisels. This was a birthday present for my dad. Particularly impressed with the quick delivery direct to his house!
