This is my first experience in using one of these, so don't have a reference to compare. Use for road trips in day camper, can use between vehicles. This seems to be ADA height, so my wife, [handicap issues] no problem with height. Flushes by pressing a button [switch] which turns on a little water pump that delivers a swirl that cleans off the surface area of the bowl better than some home residential toilets. Reservoir of fresh water stored on top half of unit and waste in bottom half. So when waste tank empty the center of gravity is top heavy, and will flip over in your vehicle if not secured. I bought the base unit and attached to floor of van. Also would use in house, after wife surgery easier clean up than those hospital thing they send you home with. Well made. Also they give a small bottle of biodegradable deodorizer for waste tank, which I'll buy more. Well made. Can take some weight. 12/31/2018 update: This sucker has held up well! I've used it between my 2011 Sprinter van work truck for camping, now doing a bus RV conversion, and I use it in there as well! I purchased the mounting plate for floor, which is really great, keeps it stable as the top fresh water resevior makes it top heaver, when bottom waste tank is empty. I forgot about it in the freezing weather 10-5 deg F, and of course the resevior froze solid, thankfully no damage, still working great! [Get some RV antifrz and mix] Still going great for temp solution until black tank is installed. I'm almost reluctant to install blk tnk, as disposal is so easy! Similar to Cassette idea. I can carry the 5 gal ok. If no poop, smell I can deal with as I pour into toilet, but poop, get some fresh air fast. This cleans up like new. I'm especially impressed how when you press the flush button, the little bit of water used rinses the entire bowl surface. Leaving the bowl clean. Better than some home toilets. As I spec out toilet for bus build I'll be checking out this company's RV toilets [need ada]...but been great as toilet tech goes.

In a recent long 3-week trip, this porta potti as the most valuable player in my DIY conversion van. I have never owned or used a chemical porta potti before so this was a brand new experience. This particular one with its battery operated flush worked very well and was easy to clean. A few tips/notes: - The separately purchased base mount is an absolute necessity if you expect this to be secured to a floor. There is no other way to secure it. Besides, the mounting base makes it real easy to install and remove the toilet for dumping and cleaning. - This toilet is nearly the same height as a standard US comfort height toilet. This was almost a problem in the van with its low ceiling. - The TP holder does not handle american sized TP rolls. BTW - you need need special TP (as in all chem systems require). Only a minor issue as I hadn't planned for its use anyways. - Read the instructions before you need to set it up. The instructions are in 20 different languages and English is not he first, second, third or even 10th language. Plan time to read through the short instructions. 10 minutes before using is not the time to play a game of matching words and pictures together. - Instructions on the chemicals are confusing as most are expressed in terms of large RV built-in toilets with 40 gallons while this is only a few gallons. Don't let this throw you off. I just followed the chemical instructions as if using a large built-in RV toilet. There should be two chemicals - one for the waste tank which breaks down solids into liquids (i.e, term chemical toilet) and one for the fill water to help keep the bowl clean. I never found chemicals for the fill water. - The manufacture recommends specific products to use for clean which I cannot find. Apparently it is very important not to use normal bathroom cleaners as these cleaners will damage the toilet seals while killing the waste breakdown bacteria. Therefore, I am using very mild detergents for now. - Re-read the instructions before filling and using. The manufacture has specific stated limits on the amount of waste water and fill water that can be in the toilet if it is in moving (as in my van while traveling). I hadn't read this part and exceeded the general limits. I didn't have any problems (aka leaks) even when driving on rough country roads. But there must be a good reason for the warning. Overall - I was hesitant to add a toilet in my van. I did and I am very happy with it. Now there is a whole new world of minor highways, back country roads and campsites available to me.

This is the best portable toilet I have ever seen. We use it several ( Friday night to Sunday) weekends a month at our small cabin. No odors, clogging or other problems. I just changed the original batteries this past weekend. I use only Thetford RV toilet paper and Thetford green liquid chemical at the recommended rate. I bring the tank home with me on Sunday night and dump Monday morning usually. I have access to my cesspool through a cover so that where it gets dumped. I have never had it splash or spit back. Not an unpleasent experience yet. Use the air vent button.I then rinse well with a hose and swirl around and that water goes in too. Then a quick disinfect/ rinse with Pine-Sol. Tank is fresh and clean the next time I use it. Based on comments here I bought the manual pump from Europe for a spare. No need of it yet. My wife uses it too and has no complaints at all. Keep in mind that we use this in a 10 x 14 cabin in a curtained off corner. If it smelled you would know it!!! At the end of the weekend I clean the bowl and seat with a clorox type wipe and cover the bowl and seat part with the original plastic bag. That stays at the cabin until winter when I drain it. I would use cheap 1 gallon bottled water to fill the flush tank if you don't have good water or fill with water from home. Some unfiltered well or lake water can smell if left in the tank for long. The flush water ( 4 gallons) lasts a long time. We always make sure the trap door is closed after flushing and then put a little water in the bowl as an extra seal. Update 8/14/18. Used Friday night, Sat, Sun, and Mon until noon. Two adults ,both types of deposits.Dumped this am, no smell, other than chemical , all liquid, no paper at all. Perfect!!!! Used 4 oz Thetford Green and 8 oz water to start off. I added about 1 oz extra green on Mon. morning as insurance. Thetford RV paper used exclusively. The black tank was just barely showing red as we were packing up on Monday. I have a dedicated Aquatainer (7 gallon) jug in case black tank filled. I would have transferred the black water to the Aquatainer and brought that home to dump also. That would give me 12 gallons of black water capacity. We didn't need it, but at four days we would have. I added 1 gal of flush water on Monday. You MUST use chemical ( I use Thetford Green) ,you Must use RV toilet paper ( I use Thetford RV type ). Read and follow the instruction manual.

Great little crapper. I was considering a very pricey ($950) composting toilet for my cabin, but after some research I landed on this thing. So the idea of saving over $800 was a risk I was willing to take. Two adults (male & female) use thing thing daily (although I generally take my leaks outside) and I have to empty it about once per week. Emptying it is much easier than you think. I use the recommended Aqua-Kem, which deodorizes and breaks down the waste into a liquid form. When you empty it, you just rotate the "exit chute" and everything flows smoothly into your waste container. I empty mine in a regular toilet over at the main residence. Except for the most recent waste, 95% of the content is in liquid form. Just hold your nose and pull your shirt up over your mouth and let the waste waterfall begin. It takes about 30 seconds for everything to flow out. The real-water flush option is pretty rad. Often times, toilet paper will stick to the toilet (along with waste splatter), so you usually have to hit the flush button more than once. We keep a roll of paper towels in the bathroom cabinet for those times when waste gets sticky on the bowl. Just wipe it out and toss the paper towel into the trash. Or you can use TP to wipe the bowl and toss it into the crapper. But you want to avoid putting extra elements into the crapper if you can, so you don't have to empty it as often. As long as you use the deo, there's no foul smell. And remember to close the chute when you're not actually sitting on it. As it gets full, there's a bit of a smell when the chute is open ... but nothing you wouldn't expect. The dimensions are good. I'm 5 ft 10 inches and weigh 175 lbs, and my girlfriend is like 5 ft and 105 lbs. We both agree that it feels like a "normal" toilet when we're sitting on it. I refill the toilet using my hand-held shower. It separates into two elements (top part holds the water ... bottom part holds the waste), so I just tote the top portion over to my shower and fill it on up with water. I've been using this daily for nearly 3 months and the original battery is still going strong.

I have had this as a bedside toilet for six or seven months straight now. So it gets many uses every day (for number one only not number two, lol). It is nice and tall so you don’t have to sit down very far to use it and the person using it is around 270 pounds and it has held the weight with no problem. In the bottom, I use the lemon disinfectant that Sam’s Club sells, and if it starts to get a little stinky when the trap door is opened, I just add some more to the bottom of the tank.. During the time after all the uses, the batteries have never failed which is nice because originally I wanted the kind with a manual plunger because I saw no reason to have a button to push that was battery operated, but it’s turned out to be OK so far. Tips and design changes: do not let it get too full, or it will leak out all over at the seams. Keep the potti on something waterproof. When you stop hearing the liquid in the upper tank whoosh into the bottom tank, that means that the level in the bottom is very high and you’re either over the limit or very close to overfilling. So be very careful about this by monitoring the front gauge. It’s half green and half red usually at this point, so empty it then when you see this. The slider trap door at the bottom of the toilet that opens and closes is black. I would like very much if they would change this to white because sometimes you need to see the exact color of the urine in the potty and you have no idea what it is when it’s urine sitting on a black surface. The tube that the clean water comes out of when you flush has the water falling very low in the bowl, so since the exiting fresh urine hits up high on the bowl inside, some dries on that surface because the clean water never hits that area so when you empty and clean it, you have to wash the whole inside of the bowl by hand to get the dried urine off of it. I would redesign it so that the water comes out at a much higher level and on the front surface so the urine drops that are on the front inside will get washed down. All it really does now it just add some liquid to the urine which doesn’t serve a lot of purpose. For a number two, it would work fine.

We bought this porta potti for our van for long day trips because we, like most, can't stand public bathrooms. Yes, I would rather deal with the dumping of waste rather than use nasty restrooms along the highways, especially when you have kids with you. This porta potti was chosen firstly because of the reviews, and secondly because it's not so ugly like most porta pottis are. So far it seems sturdy enough and water tight. I will update later in the summer after a few months of use, but so far I have high hopes for it. UPDATE: Okay, we have now been using this on the weekends mostly when we go to the park. After a few uses I will say it is quite easy to use. I press the flush button before using so that there is a little water in the bowl and after using it flushes quite well. Enough water swirls around the bowl to make sure the paper goes down into the lower tank without having to get your hands in there to push it down like some units will have you do. I will mention that when we use the potti we lift both the lid and the seat and actually sit on the solid plastic because of how flimsy the seat feels. I don't know if anyone else has a problem with the quality of the seat, but really this is not a big issue. As it so happened, the first time I used the unit I accidentally lifted the seat with the lid and didn't realize it until after I was finished and that's when it dawned on me that that is really the best way to use the potti to insure that the seat doesn't break. For the kids this is not an issue and they use the seat, but for a larger adult I don't recommend it. The potti itself is very sturdy and can hold up to the largest of users but the seat is another story altogether. I highly recommend this for its quality, usefulness and nice design.

We used this to replace the toilet in our camper. Our black tank had a crack in it so rather than replace the tank, and the old toilet that was falling apart, we just went and mounted this one in there and capped off the black tank hole where the old toilet was. The overall feel is almost too light, but that isn't an issue at all when the fresh water tank is filled. Unit is actually more solid than I thought. The height of the unit is great, completely correct for your average adult. Seat is moderately comfortable and I have no complaints about it, and neither has anyone else in our group. Toilet paper holder isn't great as far as placement, but that's more because of the way the toilet is sitting near the wall in the bathroom, but that's not a big deal. It does work though, and is handy if you were going to use it in a more 'portable' application. Since we don't use the camper that much, it only needs to be emptied about once every two weeks to a month. I'd say using some extra treatment chemical is definitely recommended for such long retention periods though, as it helps eliminate odor and ensure things are broken down like they should without unwanted bacteria growth. That said, odor is NOT an issue, the unit keeps a very good seal on the built in holding tank, and I'm pretty sure it smells better than the toilet at my house does usually. One note: Make sure to close the lid before flushing. This prevents any splashing (though I hadn't had this problem personally) and prevents you from getting 'burped on' by the toilet if any pressure has built up in the holding tank. Dumping the tank: Dumping the tank is easier than I thought. I always dump it when it's about 3/4 full, and I can lift it with the built in handles. Pouring it into a residential toilet at the house is an option, though I prefer dumping it in the sewer clean out by the side of the house. This prevents any potential splashing if I mess up from being a problem. People had commented about how horrible the odor was when dumping this. I have not had this problem, provided I use an adequate amount of the treatment chemical for the retention period, as I mentioned before.

My first one star review, but as you might agree after reading, it seems warranted. I purchased the Thetford Curve for our small camper in May 2013. We camped throughout the Sierras that year but, crucially, never used the Curve as we traveled with family who had a motorhome. Thus, the Curve sat anchored to the floor plate without batteries or water and was never used. In July 2014 I finally filled the Curve with fresh water, put in the six supplied AA batteries, and the prescribed amount of deodorizer in the bottom tank. It worked flawlessly and was indispensable for a man traveling with 5 and 2 1/2 year old girls. It performed without incident as we traveled from SoCal to Dinosaur National Monument and all over in between. I emptied the tank and refilled with fresh water as needed, and it was great. The trip lasted a week and after getting home, left within a week to go to Oceano Dunes where, again, the toilet was great. Got home and cleaned the tank really well, kept water in the fresh tank and it was ready to go. In April 2015 I fixed the toilet plumbing in our one bedroom house and the project went over a day. The Curve was brought in and put in the bathroom. Tried the button for the bowl water fill… nothing. Not a noise. Opened and replaced batteries. One of the Thetford supplied batteries had discolored, but there was no leakage or corrosion. Reassembled, nothing. Removed the battery pack and tested at the contacts, 9.2 volts right where it should have been on the circuit board. Tested the contacts at the connection to the pump, 9.2v for 1-2 seconds when the button was depressed (the amount of time the pump actuates to fill the bowl with a bit of water). Reassembled - nothing. Removed the pump assembly. It looks factory new with no deposits, no mineral stains, no corrosion and the impeller spins freely. It makes no sound whatsoever when the button is depressed. Reassembled and contacted Thetford. They replied quickly and informed me of the one year warranty. I explained the situation and as one would expect, it was too far out of warranty for free service. I didn't push the issue because I understand there is no way for them (or for you) to know whether or not I’m being honest. So I figured, “Meh, I’ll pay $30 for a replacement pump, not a big deal.” And here’s where the absurdity of the modern world comes in. How much might one expect the pump assembly for a $140 porta potty cost? $30? $40 $50? No no no, you think so small… $132.48 One Hundred Thirty Two Dollars and Forty Eight Cents. For a toilet that I can buy new for $140 on Amazon. So take this review for what it’s worth. You’re paying for a toilet that has no manual backup pressure system that, in my case, lasted a total of maybe 8 months and maybe 60 pump cycles and was kept indoors, clean, and cleaned out. Granted, I stored it with some water in the freshwater tank which is a no-no, but still, a complete and total failure after roughly 10 days total of usage? Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but it seems a bit wasteful to me. So consider a pressure system maybe? Something that will not rely on a microprocessor or batteries? Or end up like me, with a $140 piece of plastic and a wife and two daughters who you now have to send off to a dark pit toilet at night when camping. Caveat Emptor!

We had house guests that we had to set up in our basement. We do not have a basement bathroom, and we wanted to make it convenient for our guests to not have to come upstairs during the night to use our bathroom. The porta potty was sturdy, good height, efficient, no smell whatsoever, easy to use and empty. We just set it up in our tiny laundry room for them, and they loved it. In the near future we will use the porta potty when we renovate our bathroom upstairs. As well, we will use it for the bedside when an elderly family member can no longer make it to the bathroom. The electric (battery flush) works great. It was not used for solid waste so l cannot comment on that. But for liquid waste it was very efficient. We bought proper biodegradable chemicals and toilet paper for it. Emptying was easy and not gross. Only wish it came with better instructions. I had to look on line for the manual. Pretty easy to figure out anyway.
