The Cycle: A Practical Approach to Managing Arts Organizations

Insightful & helpful for anyone in the arts or arts administration
I found this book very helpful in framing the issues that arts organizations face, but providing really concise concepts for how to apply to your own situation. I happen to be involved in dance, so a lot of the examples in the book really resonate with me, because Michael Kaiser's background involved helping a lot of dance companies. There was a good balance between presenting the challenges that arts orgs face accurately and honestly, while still providing a lot of ways in which one can really help boost whatever org you're involved in.

Great book!
This book was awesome! Right on point for anyone who is an arts administrator and needs to either understand what you could be doing better or confirm what you are already doing right. I would recommend this book as a resource for Arts Administration courses - you'll be learning from a seasoned professional who has experienced both successes and challenges in presenting the arts. Bravo!

Great for Performing Arts Veterans or Newbies
There is much great content here in a concise volume. A great book for performing arts veterans or students. While many of the examples are from Kaiser's time at the Kennedy Center, most of his recommendations could apply to any organization.

Practices and User-friendly.
Well-written practical recommendations that are equally useful for the uninitiated in the performing arts programming and the connoisseurs. It gives structure to the approach to managing the arts. The years of experience come through clearly in this book. Thank you for sharing Mr Kaiser.

it is still a good book if you are just starting
This is a practical book from an author who has been very successful in fundraising and development. Having said that, I wish they would also include a little bit more innovative ways for special projects financing. The world of fundraising is changing and there are a number of other innovative ways to raise capital for the arts. Nevertheless, it is still a good book if you are just starting.

Important read for all arts managers
A simple yet effective approach to working with your board and staff to build a family around your arts organisation. A great follow up to The Art of the Turnaround. This book outlines a clear process with implementable actions. I only wish it had more examples of arts companies at each of the steps, particularly around institutional marketing which is a new area for so many arts organisations.
