Review: Good books for manga readers - Dr Stone books are great for readers of manga Review: This series is getting better and better - I was initially intrigued by the premise of a cataclysmic event that turned people to stone, and some humans waking up thousands of years later, but the first two volumes were kind of bland for me. They were good, at about a four-star rating, but the main character Senku and his two friends felt a bit flat. On Volume 2, I really wanted to give up on this series and was about to give this volume four stars until after everything changed. Senku came across a strange village full of people who were descendants of people who woke up before him, which made things unpredictable. Senku had to convince the residents that he wasn't evil or the son of someone banished from the village, and the story had RPG-like elements because he had to increase his reputation with villagers so that they would like him. This is where the series finds its footing and I decided I want to read the rest of the series. The new characters are likable. It's not as boring because there are new people for the main characters and villains to interact with. My favorite characters are Chrome, the scientist, and Kohaku, the fighter. Then you have a little girl with a watermelon rind over her head who is really sweet. And finally you have two brothers whose interactions with each other and Senku are funny to watch, as one of them struggles between whether he should trust this strange new human "sorceror" with spiky hair who may or may not give him a gold spear. The creations and intentions also start coming in, making the series more enjoyable to read as we start to see how Senku will rebuild technology and society from the ground up.
