Yes - definitely cut back with no more than an inch showing above ground. If your winters have a ground freeze be sure to put a couple of inches of straw over the ground where you planted.

A year or two before the asparagus is mature enough to harvest. You'll know when in the spring.

No, it is not too late to plant the asparagus roots. As long as they are full of life, plump and not full of rot, they can go into the ground.

Im looking for an asparagus that grows well in Louisiana. The area is partly shaded at some parts of the day. Do you have any type to recommend?

I do not know how similar our climates are but I am in zone 8A. I got Jersey-knights las year and we are now enjoying them this spring; they are delicious. They get afternoon sun but are shaded before 1:00 PM. They did very well under those conditions.
