For a smaller wrist would you say this still fits comfortably or is there a lot of excess band?

My wife's wrist is small and it's fine. The excess goes inside anyway so there's no excess hanging out.

Can it work with a Samsung or does it have to be a Google phone?

My pixel watch works great with my Samsung phone. I haven't noticed any compatibility issues. The bands aren't interchangeable though.

Does anyone know how long it takes for the smell to go away?

I did not buy the lemongrass band. The woven one I bought has no smell.
