Q: What is thickness of the metal?

I really don’t know the thickness but they are sturdy. Not flimsy. Hope this helps.

Q: Is it available in brushed finish?

yes, but you will need to search venders!

Q: Do they work on carpeted stairs? How do they stay in place?

Yes they are great and yes they do work on carpeted stairs.

Q: Are the holes on the vertical or horizontal surface? I'd be nervous to drill into my new tile floor, but the riser below is wood.

I installed mine with the screws on the horizontal surface. I think that is what they intended. I suppose you could install it the other way with the screws on the vertical service.
