I want to annoy my brother by giving his kid this thing. Will it drive my brother crazy? Would I be better off with a drum set?

For the "drive them mad with drums" contingent there is the option of the Stylophone Beat Box. All the portability of the Stylophone but with the penetrating power of percussion.

is this an enemy to the brotherhood of steel?

The brotherhood may yet prevail! Stay tuned!

Is the transition between notes portamento when sliding the stylus up the ribbon?

I would describe it as more akin to a "discrete Glissando". Sounding more like dragging one mallet up/down/across the bars on a xylophone. Hope that helps, T.

Would you need any other equipment for this to make sound, or to just function like in the video??

No. It's got its own speaker, so it produces sound. It can also act as an external speaker using a 3.5 mm jack.
