Can they be used with actual donuts?

Yes. I put 2 regular size Krispy Kreme donuts in each box at a slight angle...not flat. Because of the box size, 1 donut just didn’t look adequate. I also placed a small paper doily in the bottom of the box.

Would a full size donut fit in the box?

Yes. (See details in my answer above)

Around the same size of a happy meal box from McDonald's and is good quality.
