Patience Is The Key
I bought Sniper Elite a few weeks back. The first thing I want to stress about this game is that, if you are looking for a fast paced, run and gun shoot em up then look elsewhere. Sniper Elite is all about patience, much like sniping basically. The game is set towards the end of WW2, you play an American OSS agent, posing as a German soldier against the Soviet Empire. Your job is to prevent the Russians from gaining access to the secret weapons in and around Germany, the A Bomb being high on the list. The secret of this game is that you must check your surroundings with your binoculars and your scope before you make a move. That means checking windows, doorways, rooftops and wreckage, to name but a few, for enemy soldiers before you decide to move through the open. If you do not then you will be shaking hands with mr dead very quickly, trust me! The levels are quite short but due to you having to take your time they do last well. The best thing I love about this game is the kill shot camera. If you shoot an enemy with your rifle, such as a head shot, the camera will follow the bullet in slow-mo right up to the moment of impact and you will recieve a distance and award rating accordingly. I once got 178 meters, covert head shot but I haven't been able to do it again. The graphics are okay, sharp and realistic and the environments, while contained, seem so vast, especially when you use your binoculars for spotting. You can customise the game to elliminate the gravity and wind effects so your bullet will not fall or stray over great distances but this will not let you gain scores. The only down side is that their is only the campaign or net play functions. their is no single player deathmatch options nor challenges which does make the game seem very limited. Once you've completed it and have no internet connection there's nothing much to keep you coming back.If you like strategy more than action then this game is a must. You will often be placed in a situation where you will have to choose how and who to elliminate as if you get into too many open firefights you will be dead.Again if not sure try before you buy!

An excellent game
This is the best PS2 game I have played by far. It is atmospheric, the sounds of battle are constant. It involves a high degree of skill in order to aim the shots accurately for a covert kill. It makes you think, the most obvious approach is not always the best and if you are going in for a long distance head shot have you covered weak points. The game draws you in completely and you soon find yourself looking for places to hide and make the shot.Sniping your way across war torn Berlin in a variety of missions you certainly get your monies worth. It is not an easy game and the gung ho approach will also make it a short one, stealth and timing are key skills here.If you like your games immersive with longevity (my copy is 3 years old and still played)with a mental element rather than blasting everything in sight, then this is for you.Take the shot and relocate and watchout for other snipers. The bullet cam lets you assess your shots and soon you will want to shoot that bit further it get the longest shot.Pity there is not a Sniper Elite II

Completed it, and it feels like I'm losing a good friend...
Excellent, immersive game. Perfect distraction after (or in between) long work shifts. Perfect balance between long range, sneaky sniper activity and straight up guns blazing "everybody must die" mode - it's not a mindless shoot 'em up, and demands thought and strategy to work through properly, but it's a joy to play through, such to the extent that you don't mind getting down on your belly and crawling down a bombed out street just to off a sentry so as not to bring any unwanted attention from his comrades. Great environments, really took a liking to some of those maps. Graphics are pretty decent, with some really nice attention to detail (nearby birds taking flight when you loose a few rounds...) Your enemies are mostly intelligent enough to make the experience really enjoyable - and although there are one or two blips (a soldier watches his nearby comrades catch bullets and fall to the ground, but doesn't move or run for cover...) it was mostly all good. Sniper Elite holds a special place in my heart. Now, where's the sequel?

2 years on still my favourite PS2 game !
I like this game for many reasons. In fact I'm yet to play another game of equal enjoyment (any game not just shoot 'em up).- it's got a good balance of strategy and action. Good combination of sitting patiently in a hideout as well as taking enemy out.- reasonable degree of challenge as shooting form the heap most likely to get you killed.- there is a good variey of tasks- blowing up tanks, quietly taking out sentries, stand-offs with enemy snipers, gun fights, etc- as other reviewers note the atmosphere is brilliant- bomb explosions nearby, passing trucks and patrols, etc- It even manages to be politically correct as the Soviet troops the sniper fights against are the hated Stalin's secret police rather than Zhukov/Konev's armies.- It's got a secret level for those who want more after the final assignment, but it is a challenge- 1 life for the whole level and plenty of enemy!

Great Stealth Strategy Action !
Very enjoyable if stealth and outwitting the enemy is your thing ! You really learn that brain beats braun every time in this game !Very expensive for some odd reason ( I usually pick up PS2 games for £1 or £2 at 'CEX' stores )This game is not easy at all.......takes time to get the feel of the controls and the environment ....set to 'Rookie' initially, ( even if you are used to sniper games !!) Software reacts to your movements and therefore no 2 games are ever the same ! Great re-playability as a result, and 4 difficulty levels to progress through!Fantastically involving game, immersive experience, atmospheric and challenges your strategic mentality.A great game ...graphics are a bit drab.....2005 era...also save/load game menu system is a bit confusing ...............but overall highly recommended if sneaking about and sniping is your gig !
