Didn't notice the expanded volume, but there's no weird smell, just reminiscent of coconut. I've been making my own potting mix from coir for a couple of years, just wet, mix with some perlite and add plant food. Unlike bags of moist potting mix, it doesn't come with a population of fungus gnats. Awesome stuff.

This works really well once you hydrate it properly. It expands a lot and holds moisture nicely, which is exactly what I was looking for. I did rinse it before using just to be safe, but overall it’s clean and easy to work with. Much less messy than traditional soil. I’d definitely use this again, especially for indoor growing setups.

It is fascinating how these bricks rehydrate to create a fluffy base that you can tailor the soil to the plant's needs by adding other soil components. I will be purchasing much more of this product!
