Wanted As Little Plastic In My Cuppa As Possible - This Delivers!
Beautiful kettle, thanks to the superbly useful review by EverLivid I was able to remove the red plastic scale inside since I, too, bought this wanting a kettle without large acres of plastic leaching and breaking down into the water. The plastic is hard AB type, a single stepped piece which curves about three-quarters around to hug onto the metal bar, and is presumably snapped on after manufacture. The most suitable tool I had was a vintage letter opener with a strong narrow steel blade, I had to apply a fair bit of pressure downwards in line with the metal bar, but then the red plastic just popped off, it appears undamaged (I did test the kettle first to make sure it worked in case I mauled it, and voided the warranty). Without EverLivid's tip, I would have had no idea how to tackle this, so thank you indeed. My hands aren't that strong but once I got the idea of the downward pressure to pop it off, it came away easily. Wrapping a tea towel over the top of your tool would also apply downwards pressure if you have trouble gripping a narrow tool hard enough to drive downwards. My letter opener is old and has soft, curved, blunted edges - if you use a new one for this, protect your hands, and check it's sturdy enough, that plastic does NOT want to let go! You need a downwards-force motion to wedge in and drive the plastic to pop off, you don't need to cut it or pry sideways. I hope in future Russell Hobbs invests the extra few pennies (which I would have gladly paid) to make gauges in steel or simply mark the interior, which is how the Max fill line is done at the top. A steel inner lid and no weird silicone (?) ring in the base, marketed as 100% stainless steel interior, would have elicited an extra tenner from me, and I'm far from rich. Best Bits: the pouring spout is controlled, tidy, and allows for rapidly filling a teapot, mug, or saucepan. I like the open handle, this allows for taking hold with slightly more versatility, you don't need to line your hand up and slot it in. Not a big issue but this feels nicer, it also makes the kettle appear less bulky. Zero weird smells or tastes, I'm super picky about stuff like that, and this passes with flying colours. Negatives: the kettle makes a faint buzzing sound as soon as it's turned on, I hope that's not a sign of an electrical fault, and will update this review if it is. Finally, this kettle has no LED at the base to indicate power-on, it's not that important but for some reason a little orange LED first thing in the morning always makes me happy, so I'll mention it here. But at time of typing it's been in service six weeks and overall, it's a total winner - can see me buying one or two more to keep handy, and save hours questing for a similarly low-to-no plastic model in future.

Nearly plastic-free
I was looking for a kettle with no plastic in it, since I've learned that plastic is getting into our bodies, especially when it's in contact with hot water. This kettle almost fits the bill. There's a piece of moulded red plastic inside that's supposed to be a guide to how many cups you've filled the kettle with. I removed this with the aid of a large screwdriver — it's just clipped on. There's also a black plastic filter at the spout — again, this is quite easy to remove, as it, too, is just clipped in. All in all, this is a nice kettle for a great price, and it's plastic-free with just a couple of minutes' work.

Plastic Free Kettle!
I bought this kettle as an emergency replacement for an old Russel Hobbs kettle that finally stopped working. One big concern I've had with buying a new kettle is plastic making contact with the boiling water. In fact, I've been looking at some plastic-free kettles that cost over £100. But I don't really want to spend that much on a kettle at the moment. But I'm delighted that after a bit of modification, I was able to remove all the large plastic components from the inside of this kettle. The limescale filter holder came off quite quickly. I don't need it since I only boil filtered water, so I never get any limescale build-up. The cup measuring fins took a lot more work to remove. The correct technique is to drive a wedge between the red plastic wrapping around the metal rod, and gently tap until the plastic piece comes off. I tried using my hand to pull the cup measuring piece off, and I found that it simply did not want to let go. But eventually it did come off using the wedge technique. There is a small ring at the bottom of the metal rod that feels soft and squishy, making me think it's made out of silicone. I could probably remove that too, but I left it on. And unlike my old kettle, this one does not have a "water level" window. That might be an issue for some, but for me it's exactly what I wanted. No plastic exposure through that. Otherwise, a nice kettle. Boils quickly, looks sleek, and quieter than my old Russel Hobbs. And this modification did no harm to the kettle at all. If plastic is not a concern for you, then I can highly recommend it as-is. If you want a plastic free kettle on a budget, then you have the option to remove all the plastic that makes contact with the water.

fast
Some reviews complain about a wobble, I realised, you need to choose the length of wire extension first then clip it in, no more wobble. I miss the pop-up lid of my last one, but I'll get accustomed to just lifting the lid too. This is going to need a little more cleaning maintenance due to the chrome finish, but it does look good. One last thing, it is a little loud, but I don't mind that, I can hear it complete its mission from the next room.

Does Russell Hobbs understand ergonomics? Apparently not.
Replaces a 'no name' kettle bought from a local shop 18 months ago which died. Hopefully a well known brand will last some years. A couple of negatives 1) why is it so noisy? Is it because of the metal construction? 2) the plastic lid is not tethered in any way to the main body of the kettle, in other words it does not pop open at the press of a button, you have to manually remove. This is not in itself a problem, however there's no way to get a good grip when you try to grab! Poor engineering in my opinion, I have solved the problem with masking tape which adds enough friction between fingers, thumbs and plastic lid. Not very elegant but I can't be bothered to go to trouble of returning. One of the reasons for shopping in a real shop – you can actually handle the merchandise! On a positive note, boils nice and fast, and has some orange paddle things inside which help you judge how much water you really need. Would I buy again ... meh!

Nice and study. Just wish there’s no plastic measuring inside as it beats the purpose. It’s still a great product though.
