Excellent for roots, clay soil, and tight garden spaces
I purchased the Root Slayer Hand Garden Trowel and liked it so much that I bought a second one to leave at our cottage. I use this both at home and at the cottage because we have a lot of tree roots that grow underground around and through our garden beds and borders. What I like: • Very well made • Heavy-duty construction • Feels strong and durable • Saw-like edges really help with roots • Great for cutting through smaller underground roots • Makes root cleanup much easier • Saves a lot of time and labor • Excellent for garden beds and borders • Works well in tighter spaces • Easier to use around existing plants • Safer and more controlled around barriers, edging, and planted areas • Helpful for maintaining areas where roots keep creeping back in • Also works well in thicker, compact soil • Very useful for our clay-heavy soil • Handy size for regular garden maintenance • Useful enough that I bought a second one for the cottage Things to be aware of: • This is the hand-size version, so it is best for smaller roots and tighter areas • For bigger roots or heavier digging, the full-size Root Slayer is stronger • The saw-like sides are a big part of what makes this tool useful • If you have roots growing into your beds, this is much more helpful than a basic hand trowel • It is especially useful for ongoing maintenance, not just planting Overall: This hand trowel has been a great tool for me. At both my home and cottage, tree roots creep into my garden beds and borders very quickly, especially in spring and early summer. I use this to clean up new roots, prepare new growing spots, and maintain current garden areas. The saw-like sides really make a difference. It cuts through roots and compact soil much better than a regular hand trowel, and it saves me a lot of time and effort. The hand size is especially useful because it can get into tighter areas and around existing plants more easily than a larger tool. I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with roots, garden beds, borders, or heavy clay soil.

It’s a trowel, not a shovel!
The Root Slayer trowel works exactly as you’d expect for such a tough looking tool. It digs aggressively in hard soil, and will hack through small roots nicely. Overall a well made and versatile tool. Note that while it is a tough tool it has its limitations. The blade snapped when I tried to pry out a particularly thick thistle. Totally my fault, but Radius replaced it under warranty anyway when I sent them a email with photos. Lesson learned: don’t use a trowel when the job calls for a shovel!

Makes work in the garden easier
This is a very versatile trowel for the garden. It will make your yard work easier as it comfortably slices through turf and roots of larger annuals and perennials. It features a comfortable handle and a well-made sturdy blade that will likely outlast the owner.

My best yard tool, and a great gift too.
I love this item. I am a 77 yr old female living on 15 acres of tree farming. This tool works for everything: digging, sawing into sod, sawing thru roots, weeding and so many things. The only other tool I need are clippers. I wish I had it years ago. For sure the best find in years.

Gardener's need in your tote
I bought the large version and love it so much I saved up for the trowel. It is easier to use in smaller areas where I don't need my back or legs to help dig. High quality and comfortable handle to use.

Handy saw edges on the side of the trowel
This trowel does a great job when working with soil that is loaded with roots. Previously I had to hack away or maybe use my rip-saw to cut through thick roots. This trowel has a partial saw edge on each side of the trowel. This edge blasts through skinny roots as though they are not there. Thicker roots can get sawn through with the edge - I simply shove the trowel in, making sure that the saw edge gets forced across the root. The saw edge works in one direction and has little trouble with roots up to one inch thick as long as you maintain contact between the saw edge and the root and are reasonably forceful. I think this could cut thicker roots, but at some point it makes sense to use something like a rip saw on really thick roots.

My favorite tool in the shed
This is my favorite, most useful tool for lawn and garden work. I like it so much that I've given them as gifts to my sons and brothers-in-law and I highly recommend it to others. The spade end of this trowel is heavy duty steel. The v-notch allows me to pry out rocks and cut through roots--same with the sawtooth edge. The handle is reinforced, and I have used it to pound-in stakes. Even the cutting hook comes in handy for slicing twine around bales. I have a zoysia lawn and, despite installing edging, the zoysia grass invades planting beds. The Root Slayer allows me to cut down through the spreading zoysia and then pry up the tentacles of grass--much better than any other weeder or garden trowel. Its flat trowel allows me to skim under weeds in the bed and scoop them out roots and all.

The Best Trowel
This trowel is great! I’m not able to use a shovel due to a knee replacement, so I dug all my holes with this trowel. It cut through the dirt, dislodged the rocks and dug up the clay. Every gardener should have one of these trowels.

Great robust tool against roots and weeds
This is a fantastic little tool. We have a large garden with borders that need regular maintenance. This has made that chore so much easier. Makes easy work of troublesome roots and is robust and easy to use. It’s been a great addition to my armoury and I may win the battle of the borders one day now.
