Vostok company story starts back in 1942, when one of the Moscow watch-making plants has been evacuated from Moscow to a little town Chistopol located on the Kama River. Defense equipment was the only company output during war years, but as soon as the war was over Vostok started to make mechanical wrist watches - the main production item ever since. In 1965 Vostok company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union. This year marks the creation of the world-famous "Komandirskie" ("Commander") watch. Military watch grew very popular even with people who were unaware which end of the gun bullet comes off, mainly due to high precision, excessive reliability and durability. The appearance of the watch also contributes to its appeal - functional and clear-cut design invoked the feeling of belonging to the tough world of combat professional. The experience which Vostok gained through development of the army watch was the foundation of our next special watch - "Amphibian". This impressive timepiece in stainless-steel case endured the depth of 2000 meters - kind of a wrist submarine. Success of the professional watches determined the company's present philosophy - to create mechanical watches maintaining precise timekeeping at any temperature, in any environment, surviving heavy pressure and blows. The viability of the chosen strategy is now time-proven. A vast multitude of people both in Russia and abroad boasting "Vostok" watches and various international prizes awarded for high quality and commercial success testify to this. In 1996 Vostok started a partnership with US "Capital Trading" company aiming to create a new generation timepiece. The watch assembled to US sales by Sputnik TM technology.

Superb quality for under $100
I own 4 other Vostoks and this one by far is right up there with my beloved torquise dial "Scuba Dude" Amphibia.Watch came without the plastic box, but in a cardboard box instead. All the plastic stickers and protective wrap were on the watch so I know it wasn't a return.Surprisingly the bracelet fit my 8" wrist without any adjustments. I almost immediately removed the bracelet and am now wearing this on either a Nato, Perlon or a Milanaise mesh bracelet.I Will report back with the accuracy later, but for right now this watch is a keeper.P.S. I already have the Yellow, Blue, and Red dial versions of this watch on order!

This Komandirskie Rounds Out My Vostok Collection (for now!)
The green dial Komandirskie completes my 6-watch Vostok collection. These are all casual weekend watches for me and I am having fun mixing and matching NATO straps on the colorful Komandirskies. I left the stock steel bracelets on the two with steel bezels.

Quirky as expected, unexpectedly attractive...
Assuming you've done your Internet/YouTube research on these Vostoks before purchasing...Overall fit-n-finish is pretty nice by utilitarian standards. Some of the corners around the lugs and underside of the case are nearly blade sharp, but those edges aren't really exposed while the watch is worn; they might scratch if off and dragged across a surface -- a wooden nightstand, for example.Mine came without the date complication, which should have been included. I don't know if it's simply missing the window on the watch face or if it was assembled with an alternate, date-less movement. The seller, most likely, simply sent the wrong model. It's fine, didn't feel like dealing with the date anyway, but it's probably a less expensive model; maybe I should have saved a few bucks. The bidirectional bezel is step-less (no clicks) as expected. It turns only with some effort though, which is a pleasant surprise -- under normal conditions it doesn't seem that it will slip on it's own. You'll hear stories of these bezels basically spinning freely with a stiff breeze, so maybe I got lucky. The bracelet is also surprisingly good (not great). I've heard horror stories of pinched arms and plucked hair, but it really has been fairly comfortable. I'll soon swap it out for a NATO anyway, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if it was my only option.Printing and color on the dial and bezel is precise and attractive; the acrylic domed crystal is gorgeous. We'll see how long until it's all scratched up. The vivid green isn't done justice by my mobile phone photo under office lights. The luminescent paint is actually not entirely useless. At the end of a 3 or 4 hour sleep I can make out the time okay if the room is dark. It isn't great by any stretch, but I've had worse. I don't have a good way to quantify it; let's say the lume is about 80% of the Orient Mako II -- a useful comparison for maybe 6 people in the universe, sorry. It's running fast 15 to 20ish seconds a day, which is about the same as most of my budget Seikos, so not worth nitpicking over. Since I always have a half dozen network-synchronized clocks within 10 feet of me I mostly need my watches to be interesting, and this one is that.
