As good as very expensive professional software!
I am LOVING this! I have VHS tapes that are over 30 years old. I've tried transferring them over time but never really seem to get caught up (did I mention I have a LOT of tapes?). I've used the GO VIDEO machine and that was nice but you're limited to just moving the video to DVD with no way to edit. And when the machine finally died, it was too expensive to replace and eventually almost impossible to find even used. Then I tried one similar to this product but no matter what I did, the video would not show up in the program so that didn't work. I just put the whole thing out of my mind until I came across this product. I figured with it being Amazon and I'm Prime, I had nothing to lose. This is great because you have a simple interface for uncomplicated videos (all one thing and not longer than 2hr SP mode) and an advanced mode where you can do everything from stop recording so you can insert a new tape or fast forward to another section you want to record without recording what's in between and it saves each "clip" in a list to the right of the preview window) where you can even rename them on the fly - no need to open the folder where it's being saved to edit the file name there, which is so less confusing and quicker. You can choose the quality and even the format (like mpg file or CD movie file or standard or long DVD file and more). You can even edit the video you transfer right from there or open a file outside to edit. You can set a timer, too. So if the tape runs 2 hrs but you only want the first hour, no need to watch the video. Set the timer and it will stop recording even though the tape continues to play! AND you can even export the files right from there to social media like Facebook! This also lets you create pix discs and audio files. Just choose which you want to do from the 4 very simple processes. Each is very easy to understand and it comes with excellent written and visual directions. The software disc is easy to install and it really is just the best! *Pix is of the advanced mode screen.

Does what you need it to do!
This met a need for a fraction of the price sending it out to a service for conversion would have. The bad thing is you HAVE to have a VHS machine to convert VHS movies (this is a "duh" for many of you, but I had no idea how this worked). My in-laws asked me to convert their VHS movies of my husband and his brother to DVD. We borrowed his grandmother's VHS machine. This kit consists of two main things: a conversion box and software. The conversion box connects to your line out on your VHS machine and there is a USB cable that goes from the box to your laptop or computer. The software installed easily. I like that you can see the movie playing on a little box in the software. I thought I would just be licking my finger and sticking it in the air to see when I thought it was time to stop the VHS so this is really handy. The quality of the video is just OK and be careful about the volume you choose. I really wish I had just kept it at 0. I put it to 1 and I think it created some white noise that is minorly annoying. Not sure if that noise was already on the VHS, though, honestly. My father in law had a movie he was in as an extra and wanted me to make a DVD of the VHS he taped from TV. The sound didn't have the white noise which makes me think maybe it was just the amateur video of my husband's Eagle Court of Honor that caused it. At any rate, the quality is ok and good enough for preserving memories. Not HD by any stretch, but our kids can now see daddy with a full head of hair and can hear him. It's pretty neat for me as I had never seen any videos of my husband that young. Mission accomplished. I only took off a star because the quality is just so-so, but that isn't fair since VHS quality is just so-so. I would rate this a 4.5. We used this on our laptop running Windows 7 with no issues. I am not even close to an A/V professional. I am a homeschooling mom with an engineering degree, but I don't think that degree gave me any leg up on anyone else in hooking this thing up. I am glad we bought it. I guess the only bad thing is you pay $60 and then copy your 5 DVDs from VHS and just have this useless device and software :). But, $60 is much cheaper than the quote I got from one of those services!

Some people had good luck and some did not
I gave this a try after reading mixed reviews. Some people had good luck and some did not. I did not. The video portion works fine, however, audio is a problem. Further, a call to customer service left me thinking they have no idea what they are talking about. The issue is very poor audio quality. As soon as there is a useful (proper) level going into the device it distorts. The software shows strong audio levels when the output of the audio mixer was silent and even when no audio connections are made to the device. Support told me that it will not work with anything other than a camera output or videotape machine output. Come on! Plugging the device into a video deck is going to cause phantom audio levels to go away? When I play back the file with the strong-level audio (as indicated by the software audio meter) there is nothing there. It is silent. I am an audio - video professional and have worked in this position for a couple of decades. I was looking for a low-cost and simple solution for capturing audio and video at our Church and was not concerned with top quality. I at least expected something usable. Personally, I think I received a defective unit. I would have just tried to exchange it for another unit until the call with technical support which left me with no confidence in this company. I will return this unit and probably try the Elgato video capture device. UPDATE 3-7-16 Apparently this review caught the attention of the company's technical support group. The reply illustrates my frustration with the company. For those that like technical detail, read on. This device captures analog audio and video. Video is in the form of standard NTSC via RCA jack input - just like the output of a typical consumer VCR. Audio input is analog unbalanced -10 dBV left and right via RCA jacks - just like the output of a typical consumer VCR. Recording from a VCR is the primary purpose of the device. What I attempted to do with the device was to connect the video to a camera that provided analog NTSC video output. The video recorded properly with the device. Audio was provided via two unbalanced RCA jacks on the "tape output" of a Mackie audio console at a nominal level of -10dBV - EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE OUTPUT OF THE TYPICAL CONSUMER VCR. The audio level could not be brought up to a usable level without distorting. The audio meter on the device software showed about one bar shy of going into yellow with no signal being output from the audio console. It showed the same with the audio cables disconnected from the device! How is it measuring a strong audio level with nothing connected? Playing back the file recorded with this mysterious signal yielded no audio. The purpose of buying this product was to capture audio and video that was just usable, not high grade. I have worked in audio / video (analog and digital) for over two decades. This includes broadcast, theater, and running an electronics repair business where most of my work was on VCR's. I strongly suspect I had a bad unit or there is something about the Windows 8.1 laptop I was using that it did not like. As noted, I wanted to exchange the device, but I really felt that the technical support person wasn't very interested in helping or in understanding how this was being utilized. The quick reply was that the device would not work with "live streams". In the analog world devices like this cannot sense the difference between video and audio coming form a VCR / camcorder or a live camera with audio sourced from a sound board. The video worked - that is the more complicated part of the device. Audio should be simple but that is where the problem is. I have ordered a different device which is basically the same thing (and same price) but from a different manufacturer. I am very eager to test it when it arrives. I really wanted to give this device another try with a replacement unit but the manufacturer showed no interest in this. UPDATE 3-18-16 I ordered and received the Elgato Video Capture device. The connections are the same as the Vidbox VHStoDVD. It works perfectly. After ordering, the price of the VHStoDVD went down and the Elgato Video Capture went up so there is now a price difference. The only thing I don't like about the Elgato is that the audio meters are not present while recording, just in pre-recording setup. Other than that, the audio and video quality are good and it is easy to use.

SMOOTH AND EASY, thats the way I like it and that's ...
SMOOTH AND EASY, thats the way I like it and that's what this delivers. I work in an edit studio where quality is important. I have had a couple converters that give just kinda grainy, shaky transfers (SOny Media Tower, I'm looking at you). This one, if you take the time to just read the instructions, installs beautifully first time and does a slam-bang job of transferring whatever I've fed into in. Some old Hi-8 was first, and it looked pretty darn good. Guys in the room were like, whoa! We're in business! We used S-video cable (not the supplied RCA jacks) for that. Did some VHS, and found that it gives a good transfer, but of course, its not a miracle worker. I had some garbage that is still garbage BUT its not editable in our pro machines where it wasn't just seconds before. Good VHS looks really good. The audio is very good too. No extra hum or hiss added. Operationally its a breeze. Sorry but those reviewers who have reported problems, I just don't get it. This thing does the job with a VERY easy to use interface (duh, push de button get de video). You see the video in the small viewing screen. Controls beneath that. Rewind, well, that's to rewind. Free updates. Sorry, its that simple and works great and stable every time we duh, push de button. Simple! Awesome. Exactly the way I need it to be because I function on a lot of levels with a ;lot of different equipment and just don't need a lot of fussy particulars. Good video from old stuff at last! The version we got, works on both the Mac and windows PC (have 8.1 and Windows 10 here, a disk was provided for each format). By the way, and this will be obvious, make sure you are buying for your type computer (PC or WIndows) if you don't get the one that does both because it absolutely will not work on the wrong system. Sorry for me, first time I didn't push de right button. But they took care of me which is something else I really liked. Real people at work behind the screens and phones. Buy with confidence.

The VCR/DVD combo worked well and made good copies of my family tapes before the VCR died
I bought this to replace a VCR/DVD combo recorder that I bought ten years ago because the VCR does no longer work. The VCR/DVD combo worked well and made good copies of my family tapes before the VCR died. I decided to try this Vidbox because it was 1/4 the cost of a VCR/DVD combo recorder. This Vidbox was easy to set up, simple software, and easy to record. The problem I have with it is that the quality of the video is poor. I tried 3 different VCR's and really good quality RCA cables with no better results. Pixels in the video as well as no video at times. It has a setting to correct this problem, however I could not tell any difference with it on or off. It might convert better if you are trying to copy store bought videos. That was not my reason for purchasing this. I have personal videos that I wanted to preserve and it just did not cut the mustard.

Works Well for Converting Old VHS Tapes to Digital
I’ve used this VIDBOX VHS to DVD kit to save old family videos, and it does the job pretty well. The setup is simple, and once everything is connected, the software walks you through the steps. It’s not the fastest process, but the video quality turns out good for old tapes, and it’s nice being able to put everything on DVD or digital files. The only downside is that the software feels a bit outdated, but it still works. Overall, a solid tool if you want to preserve old VHS memories.

Very Happy with my purchase, Easy to use. Some limitations on editing.
Although I have not made use of all the options on this device and software, I have been able to go through nearly 30 VHS tapes and preserve them in digital format, both to my hard drive and to dvd disc. It has been VERY easy. The options to edit are quite limited, however. For example, on a video project, if you have a main clip that you want to fade in at the beginning, then fade out at the end, you can't do that. You are allowed only one 'effect' per clip. If you have two clips, you can apply a transition 'effect', but only one. So each clip allows one transition and one effect. I also found the text quality very poor. I'm using a laptop in 1920 x 1080 resolution, yet each time I open the advanced edit software, it recommends 1024 x 728 or higher resolution, as if I am not already in a higher resolution. When I apply text to introduce a video, it comes out very fuzzy. It's also difficult to find the center of the video. There is no option in a text/ font menu where I might select 'center' text as an option. What's most important is that I get my deteriorating VHS tapes put safely to digital and retire my ancient VCR, and that I will be able to do and therefore, am very happy with my purchase.

Some bugs need to be worked out
For the most part, I like this software/hardware product. I actually am very happy with the hardware. It is easy to connect my old camcorder to my computer and transfer to digital format. I have been putting them (transferred home movies from VHS) on disk drives (I call them thumb drives). My somewhat low rating is for the editing software. If you try to get too fancy making changes, the program stops responding and if you don't save your project OFTEN, you lose all the work (and a lot of time) you put in up to that point. The PDF directions are easy to read and comprehend but it won't let you email it to print from a different printer. (Mine is out of ink right now and I wanted to email it to work so I could print it on that printer.) There are a few other options I'd like to see added. For example, there is a title screen and a credits screen in the storyboard editing. You can't copy a photo into either of these screens. It would be nice to be able to do that. It would also be nice to add a picture to the transitions between clips. And, I discovered (during this last non-responsive error) that you can add text to a clip but only to the beginning of a clip. I would like to add text to the middle of a clip, kind of like an editorial during events. I will continue to use this program; I just have to remember to save the project often and find other tricks to make title pages and ending credit pages the way I want them by making a new clip screen and adding a picture. Hopefully, it won't freeze before I get each edit done.

Dose what is supposed to do but be prépared to resolve a number of source issues
Dors what it I sas looking for, copy VHS and DVD contents to files which can be read by a computer. I was able to start copying contents vers quickly upon receipt; only problems I got were related to VHS reader ( somme cassettes could not be read) or PC configuration (missing codecs to read mpeg files) and unavailability of blue ray reader.

Received it but product license is not good
I ve received this product at the right time. Installed it following the steps. At the second step, i enter the key for the product, 3 rd time, and still the same message, the key is not good. So, I cannot use it at all. I'm just desapointed. I paid too much for a product I can't use.
