No Alexa App needed to use as a speaker
I didn't need an Alexa, but I did need a speaker for my Z3 that I use for Audio streaming and audiobooks. It was between this and the JBL, but this was less expensive, and had a higher watt speaker. I was very much pleased to find out that this motomod works right out of the box as a speaker, with no need to install the Alexa App. The only issue I have with it, is minor, and that is that it will not work if you have a slim case on the phone. Apparently some of the other Moto Mods do, but not this one. As a speaker it works great though. I can set the phone in the middle of the room, and go about my chores and hear it clearly from everywhere.

Great for a Z3 novelty... But for $150... Just go get a Bluetooth speaker
My review is based off paying $31 for it...I got this on sale for my new Moto Z3. The speaker battery was initially dead and took about 2 hours to charge fully. It fits perfectly with the phone. It does make the phone quite thick. I had to download two separate apps from play store for it to work. The Moto market app failed to work. Initially I don't have any complaints. I do wish you could use the speaker without having to remove the protective case or if the speaker doubled as some sort of protection for the phone. I think of this as a novelty to use with the moto z's. I got it on sale on Christmas for $31 regularly $150. It's fun, functional, Alexa works great, audio is decent. If it wasn't only $31 and I had paid $150 for it, I would without a doubt return it and get a Bluetooth Bose or JBL speaker. Even at $31 I find myself asking why I even bought this... The answer I'm left with is "for the novelty of it". Bottom line it's effectively useless if I break my phone tomorrow. 15 years ago I would've lost my mind over this... Now... I'm asking why isn't it Bluetooth, why doesn't it double as a backup battery for your phone, and why doesn't it function as a case or some kind of protection. Just my thoughts.

Mic isn't great but speaker is quite nice for the money
All in all, it's worth the $30 or so.Pros:- nice sound quality and volume for the money- more versatile and cheaper than jbl mod- has it's own battery (that will outlast the phone on a single charge)Cons:- It doesn't "hear" you as well as an actual echo or echo dot- you can't choose the wake word (which is especially annoying if you already have another echo in earshot)Tips:1. Tell Alexa to "pause" (if music is playing) before giving any longer commands or questions. It seems the mics have trouble hearing you when music is playing.2. Turn off voice recognition. At first I thought this setting was to just recognize voice commands... You know, to listen. But then I realized it's to ONLY hear YOUR voice. Having this on adds extra security but boy oh boy, does it not pick up commands nearly as well with this on. It seems it must be harder for it to distinguish your specific voice vs just the words spoken by anyone. This means even when it is you, the echo is far less likely to "hear" or at least respond to you when you ask it a question.Hope this helps!! 🙂

Awesome sound
Sounds amazing and the bass is good enough knowing it's coming from a mobile device... Now you can't compare this to a portable speaker. Easy to use ..just slap on and it ready to play, the battery life on this is last me the whole day. Can go wrong with this purchase and price as well.

Quick Comparison with JBL Speaker
I bought this Alexa Speaker Mod and the JBL Speaker Mod. This Alexa Speaker Mod is louder. The JBL Speaker Mod sounds better with it's Dirac Panorama Effect, but I found out the effect also works with the Alexa Speaker Mod. To use the Dirac Panorama Effect with the Alexa Speaker Mod, first activate Dirac Panorama by attaching the JBL Speaker Mod, then remove that mod and attach the Alexa Speaker Mod. The JBL app doesn't detect the change in mod, so the Dirac Panorama Effect stays. But if you open the JBL app without the JBL Speaker Mod attached, Dirac Panorama gets disabled. This is a speaker mod, so any sound that comes out of your phone will come out of the speakers. So if you use Google Assistant, it'll work with that. If you play games, it'll work with them. If you use YouTube, Pandora, or Spotify apps, it'll work with those. So if you're using the Alexa app, the speaker mod will output the sounds that Alexa makes.I like using the Alexa Speaker Mod as a speaker phone (because it has microphones) and a charger dock. I just set my phone down on it, then it charges, but it prioritizes charging the mod first, then the phone. It's almost as convenient as wireless charging. It's easy to disconnect the mod one-handed because there is a gap groove where a finger (or two) can be inserted for prying. Compared to the JBL Speaker Mod, I need to use 2 hands to disconnect it.

I couldn't hear it.
This speaker was just so so. The Alexa on it was fun and it was easy to get it up and going. That being said, I got it to listen to over my daycare kiddos sounds of joyful playing.... it does not work for that. I could hardly hear this any better than my phones factory speaker. The seller did let me return it, though I had to pay to ship it back, I was really bummed about that. I returned it in mint condition with all the original packaging. Most items ship back for free. I'm a little torn on using this seller again. They were super nice and easy to deal with though.

Will NOT pair with phone.
I have wasted 100 hours unsucessfully trying to get this speaker to pair with my phone. It snaps on perfectly, is nicely made and looks good but has zero functionality. There is no way to get any customer service to advise you.I have 2 of these phones and bought 2 speakers and neither one works at all.Maybe they're just selling off old returned broken stock. These are a total waste of time energy and money.Do Not Buy!
