Russ Kunkel's cover of classic songs by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and others, is out-of-this world. His take on Fire and Rain, Mexico and Doctor My Eyes is magical. You KNOW you've heard the song before, but it just seems to elude you - so you look at the cover and think 'of course' - I really enjoyed his interpretation, which are jazzy, funky, and ethereal all rolled into one. Got a real chuckle from reading the liner notes which states 'Russ Kunkel is the most famous drummer you never heard of'....give it listen, you won't be sorry.

I have seen Russ play with everybody, Carole King, James Taylor, Linda Rondstat, and CSN. I had no idea this CD existed and I'm so glad that I bought it. It is an EXCELLENT cd and each song he does is a cover with a sound that makes it his own....great purchase.

oh boy is this one great. Russ Kunkel is known as a premier session drummer. But this single and only cd from him is just so great! If you smooth jazz, this is definitive.

かつては「James Taylor」のバックバンド「Section」のメンバーとして、そして「Jackson Browne」をはじめとした多くの西海岸のミュージシャン達のバッキングを務めてきたセッション・ドラマー。特に70年代〜80年代には多くのアーティスト達のアルバムに参加している事で知られています。個人的にも、あの前ノリって言うわけではないんですけども、跳ねるような？弾むような？彼のドラミングには大きな魅力を感じています。そう言った辺りでは「Jim Keltner」や「Jim Gordon」等ともまた違った味を魅せてくれていたロック・ドラマーでした。その彼が、奥さんである「Nicolette Larson」を亡くしてからしばらく表舞台には出ていなかったように感じますが、此処に来て実に素晴らしい初リーダー・アルバムをリリースしてくれました。もう選曲からして聴いてみたくなるような選曲。そうしてそこに詰め込まれたサウンドはお洒落メロウソフトな雰囲気に包まれた西海岸フュージョン・サウンド。歌こそありませんが、じっくりジワ〜ッと心癒してくれるサウンドがたまりません。ドラマーのリーダーアルバムと言えば、ありがちなのはやたらドラムソロがバンバンビシビシ入っていて、やたらハードなノリでちょっと疲れっちまうって言う感じですが、本作での「Russ Kunkel」は決して前に出ることなく、いつものセッションと変わらぬ、サウンドを引き立てるバッキングに徹しています。そこがまた彼らしくって良いじゃないですか！しかし、原曲のイメージが大きく変わってしまっているアレンジの斬新さにもちょっとビックリ。処で「Nicolette Larson」との間に生まれた愛娘「Elsie Larson-Kunkel」は最近もう歌っているようですね。でも本職は女優さんみたいですね。
