A LOT FOR A LITTLE
This scanner does a lot for a small amount of money. I needed a simpler scanner to compliment the other scanners in my tool box. I was surprised of how extensive its capabilities are and even surpassing my 4-year-old competitor's scanner that was a few hundred dollars more. The scanner is light, nimble and it responds very quickly. This D5 scanner boots quickly in about 15 seconds and then subsequently will connect to the vehicle that is being queried in a reasonable amount of time. Scanners will connect quicker in some cars than others depending on how responsive the PCM/ECM provides the information that is being requested. In this example the PT Cruiser has a slow responding PCM with many scanners and code readers and the D5 linked to the car in 25 seconds. This quick link is a victory for this PCM with this XTOOL scanner. Space does not permit a complete review of all of this tool's capabilities but there are pictures included to illustrate a small portion of the D5's capabilities. There are two pictures that highlight the special functions that are available that include the two most common functions that are oil resets and TPMS resets. It is my opinion that there are a lot of functions included with this inexpensive tool. I wanted to check the injector pulse width during cranking commensurate with the map sensor voltage and coolant sensor voltage. These four parameters were selected from the live data menu and then "combined" by using the combine command. The D5 then places the data on a graph in real time and you can see all of the parameters selected as the vehicle is being cranked or while it is running. The limit is 4 parameters which is both helpful and sufficient. There is a pic included of this exercise. The last data query that was initiated was to combine and graph the oxygen sensor activity. As the graph illustrates the upstream oxygen sensor is switching actively as expected and the downstream sensor is more stable as expected. This was an efficient, quick, and easy way to audit the oxygen sensor activity and all the different parameters on the scan tool at the same time. A picture is included for this exercise also. I counted 91 different vehicles available to scan from the diagnosis menu on the XTOOL home screen. There is probably some that I missed but it is an impressive catalog of vehicle brands for a scan tool that is as inexpensive as this D5. It will of course read and clear codes which is the most important function that we require. Considering all of the capabilities that this tool offers I feel that I spent my money very wisely and very satisfied with this tool to date. I will update this review if there are any significant issues that transpire.

Out the box, straight to work!
This is perfect for the DIY-ers! Love the simplicity and how easy it is to use. This reads 4 modules but sometimes the simplicity is the best thing. It reads all you need to see and will show enough to diagnose a car. This is definitely a must fellas. A good truck scanner to always have when needed. You can view all data or custom to selected few. And xtool listened to us. They added the battery voltage! They do take your feedback. My favorite part was customizing what I wanted to see and then being able to see the graph there and then Screen fits perfect in the glove box. The data live update is very responsive and does allow you to see data fast. This is perfect for first time owners of a scanner or those who have the ones with all the bells and whistles like the D9S or D8S and just want something to use quick outside the shop. I really like this thing. Keeping this one to replace my a30 pro

Tablet based OBD2 scanner for the price of a smart phone based OBD2 dongle.
I used the D5 to scan two vehicles. The first was a 2016 Ford Fusion. The scanner auto identified the car and quickly scanned the PCM, ABS, Restraint module and Parking Aid module. You can save a complete report and email it for a hard copy. The second vehicle was a 2007 Suburban 2500 4WD. It correctly scanned the ECM, Transmission Control module, the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Module ( airbags) , and the Electronic Brake Control Module. Even tough this was an older vehicle, the scan was just as quick. The Xtool D5 is a complete tablet based scanner for the price of one of those scanner OBD dongles that require a smart phone to use. The display is larger than any smart phone. Available updates are notified on the main screen, and are downloaded easily. Updates are free unlike other scanners that range from $100 per year and more. The special functions eliminate the need to pay a shop or dealer to perform the tasks. The small size and rugged case make it ideal to keep in the vehicles in case of emergency. Identifying a problem on the road could prevent costly repairs. Xtool has an excellent technical support department whose access is free for life.

A sophisticated scan tool for the budget minded, home mechanic with outstanding factory support!
This scanner works well with my 2020 Forester. I specifically needed a bi-directional tool that would allow me to perform my own brake service which requires commanding the Electronic Parking Brake System to retract to the maintenance position. The D5 tool I received had that function in the menu and recognized my car, but reported it was unable to complete the requested function. Xtool support replied to my email very quickly and offered to post a beta test version update, if I had the time to work with their tech staff. The new version was posted the following day and worked out very well. I'm now the proud owner of a fairly sophisticated scanner tool that matches my budget and home mechanic skills.
