Do i need 3rd party software? And is this mac compatible?

The device is an adapter. It will convert communication protocols such as RS232, RS422 and RS485 in and outbound into ethernet ( TCP) Packets. MAC's and PC's both use TCP. The software would be created by you. You would need to give a description of your intended use case(s) for a more definitive answer.
