The Artist's Palette: The Palettes Behind the Paintings of 50 Great Artists

To be clear: This is NOT a technique or tutorial painting book. It is a book which explores the specific pigments and colors used by famous artists. It also has many photos of the actual palette used for a given painting, which itself is like a separate piece of art. If you want a beautiful (and somewhat fascinating) coffee table book, this one is a great eye-catcher. If you're looking to improve your oil painting skills, then unless you're looking to compare pigment usage for similar projects of your own, I can't recommend this book for that specific purpose. Beautiful book, though.

Very unique approach to an art book. Shows the pallets, the painting, and the swatches for a given painter in an easy to access format. While you can drag a painting into a program like Illustrator and generate a swatch pallet at any time, it is nice to have everything presented in context like this.

This is a beautiful, high-quality book. The paper, the photographs, and the cover are all excellent and feel very carefully produced. I really love the concept of the book: presenting painters through their palettes. Wherever possible, the book also includes self-portraits, one of the artist’s most well-known paintings, and sometimes photographs of their studio, tools, and paints. It is fascinating to see a photograph of a palette alongside the finished painting created with those exact colors. It is especially interesting that the book features and highlights many women painters, presenting their color choices and palettes as well. The book is highly educational for artists, but even for non-painters it is visually striking and genuinely engaging. A wonderful combination of insight, beauty, and inspiration.
