would this work to install crown molding?

It drives 2-size brad nails 5/8 in. and 9/16 in. as well as a variety of T50 staples from 1/4 - 9/16 in. so with those dimensions I really doubt it would do crown moldings.

How do you load the nails, brads?

Just about the same as the staples, except you lay the stapler on its side, place a row of the nails in the same tray as the staples, close the guide and fire away. Remember, it loads from the bottom not the back of the stapler.

where does the spring go inside the sta0oer

I think you removed the spring in error. Staples are loaded ,upside down in the slot after you release the spring in the rear of the device. Once you put in the staples, push the spring "rod" back in to put pressure on the staples. If you did not obtain the correct staple type, the device will not work. You must use T-50 type staples available at any hardware store or Lowes/Home Depot.
