does this fan push or pull air

It is supposed to do both. I set it up on pulling the air threw the radiator then onto the engine.

I have a 1998 bmw z3 2.8 with a dead auxiliary fan. can i use this as a replacement for the aux fan?

As far as keeping it cool I think it work, I used it in a jeep cj7 with 6 cylinder it worked well just be sure it fits from what I remember it was slightly bigger than what it says. check the junkyards first you never know what's waiting for you !

What kind of wiring comes with this fan? Do I plug it into the current harness powering the current fan?

There's only one harness. So if you have an a/c fan as well, it won't work
