does 40 pairs mean 80 pieces?

Yes. But the way they are packaged it is pretty hard to use only one of the pair at a time. Basically once the pack is ripped open they start to heat up.

What is the expiration date on the 40 pair if I order now?

Wew bought a case of these 2 years ago with an expiration of 2024 and they just get lukewarm now. They are no longer hot and they are useless.

does these have an adhesive that sticks to your clothing?

The box I got included a couple pairs of feet warmers. Those had sticky. The regular hand warmers do not.
