Is the black wire the positive oe negative on this?

They're not positive and negative. The black/silver wire goes to the white, and the black/red wire goes to the red. I used these to hook up my dad's headphones for the TV while keeping the soundbar that my mom listenens to. Just remember, silver = white and red = red. Simple.
