Whynter Portable Air Conditioner 11,000 BTU with Dual Hose Dehumidifier & Cooling Fan for 350 Sq. Ft. Rooms, Includes AC Unit Window Kit, ARC-110WD (5,900 BTU SACC), White

My husband and I needed a portable AC unit for our computer room as it it located upstairs in our apartment and the central AC does not efficiently pump cool air to the top floor. It would be like 5-10 degrees hotter upstairs than the rest of the apartment. With our computer room having several computers and electronics, it became unbearably hot in the summer months, and cranking the AC down did not help (it only made the bottom floor colder and the top floor the same temperature). After much messing about with the air ducts/vents to try and 'funnel' the cool air to the top floor, we gave up and ordered this AC unit. This was a good purchase. It was easy to install with some basic tools (needed a hacksaw to trim the window piece to fit) and we also bought some weather stripping foam to create a better seal around the window piece. We have had it running non-stop all summer and most of the fall with no issues. I routinely vacuum the filter in it for maintenance, but other than that it hasn't needed any upkeep. It cools our computer room (about 10'x10') very well with the door closed, and if we leave the door open to the hallway and adjoining bedroom it will also cool those rooms by a few degrees. We haven't really tried cranking it down to anything below 70 degrees, but at 70 degrees it does a great job keeping the first room constantly cool and the adjoining rooms at around 72 degrees. Previously, we would have to crank the AC to 67 degrees and keep it running constantly to get a cool 72 degrees upstairs. Horribly inefficient. This has saved us a bit of money on cooling costs as the downstairs can now be left at a constant 72 degrees and the upstairs is cooled to 72 degrees with the portable unit supplementing the central AC unit. So far, very happy with this purchase and would recommend as a supplemental cooling unit.

This is a good looking unit and cools my area well. I found the following problems while using it. Problem 1. I am in NC and this unit produces a lot of water when on cool. After one day it shut down and I determined that the internal water collection tank was full. After emptying the tank the unit come back on. However the tank filled again and I had to attach a hose to the back and drain the unit into a catch basin. It is located in my garage so its no problem. I decided to run the intake and exhaust hoses directly through the wall using common dryer hookup adapters. The install looks nice and professional. If you want to see pictures contact me. I am not going to post them here Problem 2. The unit is specified to use not more than 1080 watts and draw a maximum current of 9.5 amps at 115 volts (Power P = voltage in Volts × current in amps) = 115 volts x 9.5 amps = 1092 watts (see the manual on page 16 line 4 and 5). When it threw my 15 amp breaker three times I ordered a Kill-A-watt meter for measuring current draw. Using the meter I determined that the unit was drawing 13.5 amps after operating for about one hour. You obviously cannot have any other current draws on the same 15 amp line. I contacted the manufacturer (Whynter) at 1-888-949-6837). The person who helped me said they had not had the same problem reported by other users and suggested the unit may have a bad compressor. That I should ship the unit to them for service or if I was under the 30 day window to request a replacement from Amazon. I did the latter since I had no box to ship the unit in. I received the new unit via Prime shipping and hooked it up. Well this one blew the breaker after a few minutes. I put the unit on the current and wattage meter and found it was drawing a peak of 14.44 amps which calculates to 1656 watts. Just using the garage door opener would kick the breaker out. I found one other review on Amazon complaining of the same problem. see JW review of March 12, 2014. I have quoted the pertinent paragraph from that review. (quote from JW's review) " Update: My friend purchased an LG LP1214GXR and it's noticeably quieter than this Whynter unit, enough to consider returning our unit. We threw away our box though, so it's moot. Also, we haven't been able to use our unit for an extended length of time because it has been blowing the breaker on the room. We suspect that the unit probably draws 12 amps or more (like most 13,000 BTU units) rather than the stated 10.8 amps (room's breaker is 15 amps and blows easier when it's hot outside). We bought a heavy gauge extension cord to plug it in in another room, not ideal, but don't really have a choice." I did not have the option of running it from a separate breaker so I had to have a new ($225) 20 amp outlet install in my garage to handle the unit. If I had the other box I would have returned both units. Without the box I had no way to box it up for return. Lesson learned. Keep all boxes until the return period is over or you are sure you are satisfied. I don't blame Amazon I do fault Whynter. They should have updated the manual to correct the current requirements. I chose this unit partly based on the low current required. So I was deceived!!! Lesson learned.

These portables sure are convenient for places where you only need them a month or two out of the year. And if you've got young ones or for older folks who don't do so well in heat, these are your ticket. They roll around easily on hard floors, much easier to setup than window units. Maybe not as efficient, but they make up for it in mobility. I've test run this 110WD both in a small bedroom and a medium sized living room. I've used it in both dual hose mode and with a single hose. It does seem to work better with dual hoses. At the time I ordered it was the lowest cost dual hose model. I am glad I spent the few extra dollars over some of the available single hose models. Overall its not so bad in cost. I mean btu for btu this 110WD was pretty much the same cost as a window unit! I did have a window unit years back, and portable prices were much higher back then. This 10k unit makes quick work on a smaller bedroom, but takes time to really feel cool in the larger living room. This goes along with what I was expecting. Good part is: even before you really feel cold with these things, you do feel better. They dry the air out, and that combined with a few degree drop really lets your sweat do its job rather than just sit on top of your skin. I should mention that you do NOT** have to drain the water from the 110WD. I think it only requires that on the dehumidify setting, not on the regular cooling setting. It blows the humidity outside through the hot air hose. I recommend leaving the "remote" attached to its perch to prevent loss of the remote. That is how I use it, and so far I've never needed to take it off of there. The 2nd thing, besides the slightly lower cost, that is nice about these 10 or 11k units versus some of the more powerful models is the headroom you have with amperage. On a 15 amp circuit you still have 5 amps left over for your TV or lights or whatever you want to power. You won't blow breakers like maybe a 12k or 14k unit would with multiple appliances. This may or may not be an issue.. I know with my old house and its wiring, it definitely is. For a newer house, or for a larger area I would go 14k.

I purchased this item on June 20, 2015. It was shipped on June 23, and I received it around June 25, 2015. I loved this unit. While it was noisy and annoying that the fan runs the entire time the unit is on, and the lights on the front are super bright and annoying at night (why do they put bright lights on all these machines??), the unit worked great and I loved it. Until the night of July 2, 2016. I was in bed, it was about 2am, and I heard what sounding like something falling inside the unit, then a horrible grating/grinding plastic noise. I jumped up and managed to turn the unit off. Maybe I had been dreaming, so I turned the unit back on. Nope, the awful noise was definitely still there. I pulled the hoses off, and could see plastic pieces sticking out of the exhaust hose port. I pulled a couple of the pieces out, and realized they were from the internal fan! I turned it back on, and still the noise, as it started spitting out more plastic pieces. The fan was literally disintegrating. What scared the hell out of me is a couple of things. This unit is advertised as having a remote where you can set a timer for the unit to turn on and pre-cool your space when you're not even home. I have a dog that I needed to keep a temperate climate for, which is why I purchased this unit, and this particular feature was a major necessity for me. I'm terrified to think what would have happened if I hadn't been home, because as far as I could tell, there isn't a fail-safe switch of any sort that would've turned the unit off. I fear the unit would have led to a fire if this had happened when I wasn't home. Unfortunately, Whynter doesn't give a damn. I emailed Whynter on July 4th, and they promptly replied on July 5th, requesting photos of the unit and how it was connected to the window. I sent the pictures on the morning of the 6th. A week went by and no response, so I called customer service. They said the email got missed somehow and they would follow up immediately. What I received was a "canned" email about how my warranty was up (8 days past warranty) and I could pay to send it to one of their technicians or I could have it repaired myself, including a link to the replacement exhaust fan. Throughout my research, I read other customer reviews here on Amazon about the Whynter portable AC's, and other consumers have had the same exact problem. Apparently, the unit runs too hot and begins to melt the plastic exhaust fan. Over time, the constant heat makes the plastic brittle and it starts to break down, causing the fan blades to break off and get ejected from the machine. This is a KNOWN issue with these units, and sounds like a faulty design leading to defective units from Whynter. In my opinion, because these can lead to home fires or other damage, Whynter should do a complete recall of these from the market. I reached out via email two more times, expressing my concerns and urging them to do more. They have not responded. I did tell them I would be leaving a negative review on Amazon.com, and they were not interested in keeping this customer happy, so here is my honest opinion. I was going to fix the fan in the unit and keep it, but why should I? This thing is clearly a hazard to own, and I don't want to put my home, my property, or my dog at risk. Thank goodness for Amazon Customer Service!!! I called and spoke with Tihan on Monday, July 18. I explained the situation and that I could replace the fan, but I was now fearful of using this unit, because it did not seem to have a fail safe for fire prevention when the new fan melts down (as it surely will do the same as the original one). The unit has less than 4 months of wear on it, so I should expect to replace the fan yearly. Tihan completely understood my concerns, and Amazon will allow me to return the unit to them, upon which they'll return a portion of the cost. It's not a full refund by any means, but at least it's not a complete loss, and I can invest in a better brand and a unit that will be safer. I very much appreciate Amazon stepping up on this one and protecting the consumer, understanding that it's important to keep people safe. Whynter = -10, Amazon = +10!

I got this unit last year after enduring the increasing heat of summer in Seattle the last few years. It was super easy to set up, though my window was a smidge too high for the hoses to reach comfortably, about 34 inches off the floor. The styrofoam base it came with was perfect for boosting the last couple of inches. I was attracted to the prospect of having the spigot for the water to drain up high on the model, but I haven't had to empty the tank at all. The remote works great and is super convenient. We loved it so much that we got another one for my daughter's room since she likes to keep her door closed, but the older electrical in our townhouse couldn't handle running both units at once on the same level. Her unit came with a small crack at one of the connectors for a hose that we easily repaired with duct tape with no issues. Her windows are very high on the wall, had to put her unit on a small desk, but the wheels on the bottom don't lock, so you have to figure out your own way to make sure it doesn't roll off. I no longer dread the coming of the warmer months, my room is a cool oasis in our increasingly warm days and I couldn't be happier.

I wanted a small dual hose portable A/C and had to do a fair amount of research before still making a bit a of a leap of faith with this unit. I've owned it for a few summer months in the Seattle area now and decided I like it for my situation with a few exceptions. While this unit works for my situation I could see this unit not working in quite a few others. I'm happy with this unit but I would encourage people to think carefully about what they need before buying a small unit. I have a poorly ventilated apartment that can get 10 degrees hotter inside then outside during mild Northwest summers. I use it to keep the apartment cool during the afternoon and evening and it does this quite well. I only use it in A/C mode so I don't have to worry about draining the not very well placed dehumidifier drain. The unit is loud and I expected that so it doesn't bother me, I don't use it in my bedroom and I can hear it through my wall but it's acceptable. Things I really like: 1. In A/C mode, I have never had to drain the condensation tank. Checked it a couple times and there was a small amount of water but the design is cool in that it evaporates this while the compressor is off but the fan is running. 2. I like the remote which really compensates for a thing I don't like which is temperature control. Things that are meh: 1. Don't buy it for the filter, it seems mostly cosmetic. Things I don't like: 1. Temperature control has something going on with it. I saw another review mention the temperature range where it will activate the compressor is too broad and that might be it. This can be sort of compensated for with the remote, lowering and upping the operating temperature. This is annoying as I wanted a small unit for efficiency and it feels like the unit has to be micro-managed a bit to not run the compressor excessively. It may be my situation but the gulf of compressor operation time per hour between the 77 degrees setting and 76 degrees is out of whack. 2. The mounting kit for the hoses is very lacking in my opinion for either window or door mounting. I did some checking and it appears to be a very common kit for many units. I spent about $35 in materials to make it not leak for a sliding door mount and noticed a huge decrease in compressor operation time. I used the shipping box to cut out extension panels, wrapped them in plastic and then sealed the whole thing with plastic sheeting and duct tape. Took about an hour to install with my additions and works much better. This does make the unit only portable before and after summer but I'm OK with this. I would add a star to this review if the mounting kit included 14 feet of foam weather stripping and a dozen feet of thick plastic sheeting, seriously, all it really needs besides some duct tape. Some per-measured sections on the shipping box for cutting out extensions would very pro and easy to do I would think. I'm giving this three stars as it loses one for an incomplete mounting kit, in my opinion, and minus one star for the odd temperature control. I would be very hesitant to recommend this to anyone outside the Northwest area, but if you live in the Northwest, this unit is a soft 4 stars.

I'm a licensed a/c contractor. I bought this unit for hurricane Irma. It was delivered right on time as stated the day before the hurricane hit. I used it only at night to cool a 12'x12' bedroom where three people slept. The unit was easy to set up and worked flawlessly. The caster wheels are great, you can push it around with just your finger. The hoses can be installed in a horizontal or vertical slider window. I set it to 72 degrees because I wanted to conserve my generator fuel. The watt gauge read it only pulled 1200 watts from my 5250 generator so I got 12 to 13 hours run time on a five gallon tank. The unit is a little noisy, but not more than others I've seen. This type of unit are all a little noisier than a window a/c because the compressor is now inside your room vs. a window unit. The nightlight has a subtle glow, but can be turned off. The control pad is a remote that can be removed and put on your nightstand. It has other features I honestly didn't have time to explore such as a timer, dehumidifier & 4 speeds. I just used it on automatic. I ran it for 6 days in a very humid environment as my indoor meter sometimes read 85-90% humidity and never had it shut off on me because the water needed to be drained in the middle of the night, it does a great job of evaporating it. So I highly recommend investing a little more and get a dual hose a/c. I did my research. A single hose unit only puts out about half of its advertised BTU due to it using some of the cold air in your room to cool the compressor and expel it out the hose. Overall I'm very satisfied with this unit and would highly recommend it.

I bought this portable air conditioner a little over a year ago and I have been happy with it's performance overall. There a couple of things that I don't like about it but considering the job it does, I can overlook those. The main issue that I have with this unit is the drainage of water from the unit. I live in Mississippi, it's hot and humid here and this unit produces a lot of water. The first summer I used it, I never had to drain it at all. This summer however, it is more humid and hot than last year so I had to set up a drain line for the unit to keep it drained. The design of the drain plugs are not ideal. There is a small drain at the bottom and then a larger drain at the top. They should design it so that the water all comes out one drain and not have two different drains. After a conversation with Whynter's Customer Service I purchased a hose according to what the CSR advised. I also purchased a 3/8" Brass compression curved dishwasher drain fitting just because it looked useful. I'm glad I did as that ended up being my solution to the setup for draining the unit in my situation. I installed the dishwasher drain which has a screw in cap similar to a garden hose. It fit perfectly on the upper drain. I then attached the clear vinyl tubing hose to the brass drain compression and the water flows freely out of the unit. Since I have had this setup, the unit has not stopped working once due to the draining issue. (see photos) This unit can produce several pints of water to drain per day depending on the humidity level so having the ability to drain is important. The only other issue I had with this unit is the carbon impregnated sponge foam odor filter which is an optional replacement item. The only option for replacement that Whynter recommends is with a company that charges almost 19 bucks not including shipping for one filter. This seems excessive to me so until I have an odor issue I will just be using the built in filter and nothing else. One last thing, during the major heat of the day, this unit works hard. It puts out cool, even cold air but if you are trying to cool too large of a space it won't cool it because it just can't. My room is large, probably close to 550-600 square feet so staying within the limits of the unit is recommended for optimal cooling. Dishwasher drain fitting - [...][...]

- There are many unheard of brands of portable ACs that you will see on Amazon, but in my opinion all these are just products that are made in china (nothing wrong with that) and sold in north america by small businesses in the US, that imports these products puts their name on it, and sell it to us! - I think these products that have reps only in the US should not be sold in Canada! - The problem with this is that these small businesses can not support their own product compared to well established brands that have service centers around the globe. Businesses that you don't know even where they are located, and at most they only have a phone number and sometimes only email. - For example, I figured after buying it that I am responsible for paying the shipping fees to the US if it broke I mean, even if it within the warranty period. So paying almost 600 dollars for this unit, plus shipping of around 300 dollars is just not worth the trouble! Now, talking about the AC itself, I can confirm that my window unit of 5000 BTU produced the same if not better amount of cool air. Add to that the portable ACs are known to be noisy. And I read many reviews of water leaking problems, I haven't used mine long enough to confirm this. If you can install a window unit then just go with that, but if that is not possible, and you don't mind spending a couple of hundreds knowing that it may not be worth it, then go ahead and try to find yourself a good one! It is like gambling but who knows it may work for you! My final advice, if you must buy one then at least, buy a well-known brand that has a service center in Canada!

An excellent air conditioner and easy to use the remote control. 11,000 BTUs is the perfect strength and the size of the air conditioner is not cumbersome for my apartment.
