Godzilla Minus One

His war is not over
Godzilla Minus One is a new Godzilla movie. This is a stand alone film with no tie ins to any previous Godzilla movies at all, so it's something you can easily get into.At the end of World War two, Koichi is supposed to be a Kamikaze pilot. But fear stops him from doing what he's supposed to. Then again fear stops him doing things at a key moment. He gets back to Japan. Starts to steadily rebuild his life. Gaining some unexpected things in the process. But he's haunted by what he did and what happened. He can't fully move into his new life because of the burdens of the past. When Godzilla then starts to threaten Japan, can he find it in himself to do what he needs to??This is a twelve certificate film. It does get very emotional at times. It's also a character drama. With a monster popping up occasionally in it. So it's not a film for kids.It gets the detail of the setting right. A country slowly rebuilding. It has three dimensional and very sympathetic characters. Many of them are the kind of characters you would often get in a Japanese monster movie. Scientist. A pair of workers. A child. And so on. Often in those such characters can be comic relief or there to give exposition. And they can get cliched and silly. Not here. They are people you will like and will find yourself rooting for.It has some very good themes. Not just dealing with PTSD. But about people doing what needs to be done, regardless of who they are.The spectacle when set pieces occur is utterly incredible. Visual effects. Music. Everything combines to make utterly perfect scenes that you won't be able to take your eyes off.It does slow down slightly at the start of the final third as it has to do a lot of set up there. Once past that though, you're in for a final act you won't ever forget. Then the final two scenes which are even more memorable. This even does manage to make Godzilla a character in his own right. This feels like a movie someone really wanted to make. It's not just been made for the money. It's a film that gets everything perfectly right, and becomes an unforgettable movie experience as a result. My new favourite film ever. It really is that good.Do keep watching to the end of the credits. This is just a basic dvd edition. It goes to the menu when loaded. There's no extras.Languages and subtitles:Languages. English. Japanese.Subtitles: English. Japanese. So you can watch it either way. Whichever you prefer. As I say, it's a basic edition. But having this on physical media is all I wanted. So I love having this product.

One of the franchise's finest!
Minus One one won the Kaiju franchise its first Oscar. Need I say more of the first live-action Japanese Godzilla movie since 2016? This is an absolutely fantastic movie, and a must for any fan of Kaiju cinema.

Plenty of Godzilla pluses
I had been looking forward to seeing this film – something of the surprise hit of 2023 – ever since the likes of The Critical Drinker gave it rave reviews for simply daring to do and give us what cinema audiences actually want and what Hollywood mostly refuses do to these days – the exception being Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible and Top Gun franchises – give us non woke, intelligent, fun escapism – the sort of magic that the silver screen used to give us before the dark ages of DEI and the inclusion of talent less non-entities into movie production. And for extra big finger brownie points to woke Hollywood execs, Godzilla Minus One – an Oscar award winning CGI laden monster movie was a Made in Japan for ultra-low budget of $11 million to $15 million – which was the budget for one episode in the later seasons of Game of Thrones and about 10% of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla film obviously that is not inflation adjusted. Remember the budgets for the mega blockbusters movies often run in the several hundreds of millions of dollars and even cheap Hollywood offerings is usually $50 million to $60 million so it is no mean feat to make a far better movie for at most Just $15million.The question is does Godzilla Minus One live up to the hype? The answer is Yes and No. It’s certainly very impressive stuff that delivers far more for this type of movie than it should do given its low budget. However, for me it isn’t quite in the all-time masterpiece territory as it 2 hours a 5 mins it is a bit short and final battle is a bit of an anticlimax. However, what Godzilla Minus One does do it is that it completely slays a lot of the far more expensive and somewhat mediocre competition particularly the me-too content in the MCU and DCU. It definitely gives the viewer the feel-good factor of overcoming adversity just like with the original Star Wars and say Independence Day.Despite it’s low budget the action sequences and CGI visual effects are indeed very impressive and effective at both conveying the rubble of post war Japan and the city destructive capabilities of Godzilla. In this movie CGI is used and deployed properly as a film making tool which makes the impossible possible and the unbelievable believable to help tell and advance the story rather than as the proverbial “duck” waving contest that most CGI driven movies undoubtedly descend into. Sometimes too a lack of budget can be a positive as it forces tighter direction and make for better character development when there isn’t the safety net of explosive action sequences.Overall one suspects that the good reviews for this film are as much generated by the lack of decent films as much as Godzilla Minus One’s positives. Definitely a good film but not a classic.

Excellent service all round.
Very pleased with the service overall. I missed seeing this film at the cinema, and was pleased to find that it became available on DVD so soon after cinema release. Thoroughly enjoyed the film, much lower price than a cinema ticket.

The 4K ULTRA HD Blu Ray disc version of this film has greatly improved sound and picture quality over the standard Blu Ray disc version when played through a 4K ULTRA HD Blu Ray player and a 4K ULTRA HD TV with HDR (High Dynamic Range). Also this is a lovely package!!!.
