It’s a huge step up from the gigabit port on my 453A. With compatible switches and cabling, I’ve seen dramatic improvements in transfer speeds across my local network. The 8GB of RAM (upgradable to 16GB) gives me the flexibility to run more apps simultaneously—something I felt limited by on the 453A. Why did you pick this product vs others?:This system is fantastic out of the box. Very easy setup to do the basics and works as expected. NAS is probably a misnomer because it seems capable of a heck of a lot more.

While the official site says that memory in TS-664-8G-US is not upgradable, this model arrived with one of the two memory slots populated with 8GB stick and a QC sticker over it. I plugged another 8GB stick into the free slot and it happily accepted that. Shows 16GB total now.This is an excellent NAS for money. I have both M.2 NVME slots populated as well as QNAP PCIe card with 2 x 2TB M.2 SATA drives. That is besides the 6 HD drives in the usual slots. Plenty of disk space.Do not expect this to be a powerful container or VM host, although 16GB of memory should get you part way there. But it is a great storage device. That is exactly what I needed. It runs quietly. In fact, I am using WD 5400 rpm drives to make it as quiet as possible. That is enough speed for a multimedia center and a host for backups.

I purchased this NAS so that I could migrate away from third-party cloud storage services. I have been using Google Drive to store large system images and synchronize a terabyte of data across two workstations and two laptops. While it has worked well, I wanted physical control of the data. After populating the hardware with NAS quality drives and SSDs, I could see that the company is now pushing its paid monthly services over managing storage on your own. The software (web server, VPN, etc.) does make your NAS accessible remotely via the internet, but it does not make it easy to set up your own backup and sync system. The NAS does have a file sync app but it is crude and error prone when compared with programs such as SyncBack Pro. If faced now with the choice between a cloud service like Google Drive and QNAP's sync service, I would go back to Google.I will eventually get a stable backup and sync system set up using this QNAP NAS but my advice would be to make sure this NAS meets your needs before purchasing. It is a quality piece of hardware with good, frequently updated software and it get's high marks for local backup and syncing, picture storage, media server function, etc.
