Simply the best
Chemex makes the very best coffee of any pour over method. Okay, I haven't tried EVERY pour over method. Melitta, yes. Hario, yes. A few others at the barista's. Melitta's very good. Hario I hated. But Chemex is head and shoulders above both. The coffee it makes is very clean, crisp, and bright. No sediment. It's very different from French press. If you like French press coffee, you might dislike Chemex's coffee. If you like Turkish coffee, same. But if you like clean, pure, sediment-free coffee, you can't get a better brew. The filters are thick and easy to work with and they fit into the Chemex pot without anything in between. The handle on this pot is part of the pot so no fumbling with the wooden handle and rawhide tie on the classic model, which is also great but can be cumbersome. I don't bother with scales and gooseneck kettles and measuring spoons. I grind the beans fairly coarse because Chemex recommends a coarse grind, I boil the water, I make coffee. But if you're a coffee scientist, have fun. There are drawbacks that don't bother me. The filters are not as ubiquitous as, say, Melitta's. Lots of coffee places sell them, Whole Foods sells them, but they're more pricey than Melitta's. The design of the pot means you need a brush on a stick to clean it. It doesn't keep the coffee hot. If you want to keep the coffee hot for an hour or two, pour it into a thermos. None of these are issues for me.

An excellent small pour-over pot
This is a handy size for making a full mug of coffee when you only want one at a time. Chemex uses a measurement of 5 ounces per cup, for whatever reason, and these make up to four (4) cups of that size. Paired with a high-efficiency metal filter this is an outstanding way to make a good cup of pour-over coffee. The built in(on) handle is very nice for carrying and pouring.

Perfect size, delicious coffee
Chemex glass coffee makers brew a lovely cup of coffee! The design allows for precise pour over action. This size is perfect for 1-3 people. It is sleek and unobtrusive, and cute- making it a nice addition to the counter top. I use the coffee sock organic cotton reusable filter with this Chemex and the combination allows for a very pure taste. Also I use a Cosari gooseneck kettle for pour-over precision. If you are considering switching from an automatic electric coffee maker, definitely go for it! The absence of chemicals from plastics and other treated polymers in traditional machines can ruin a good cup of coffee.

Really and for True - The Best Coffee you could ever Brew
I'm not a coffee snob (at least I don't consider myself to be one). But I can differentiate between AM/PM coffee, Starbucks and of course Pete's Coffee (usually my preferred on-the-run brew when in San Francisco). I enjoy a good Americano and I'm not afraid to tell the Starbucks baristas when they mess it up. So - I have a good sense of smell/taste. I looked at the Chemex and told myself 'It's just a glass container.' And then I saw the filters and said 'Ok, maybe this is the secret sauce that will make that delectable cup of coffee everyone is raving about.' Then I read the instructions - no wonder every machine brewed coffee has the unnecessary bitterness in it. There is a process to follow. And then of course my scientist friend and I started debating about the best methods of making coffee. I now weigh 2g of unground coffee for every ounce (read - 2g coffee/oz of water) of brewed coffee that I want, grind the beans fresh, use the Chemex filters, follow the directions (blooming is important!!!) and have the best cup of coffee ever. As sensitive as my smell and tase are, the Chemex produces the smoothest coffee and it is hard to get coffee on the run anymore. For $30-$40: it is cost effective, produces the best cup of coffee I have ever had and looks great on the counter top.

The greatest coffeemaker I've ever owned
The think I like most about my Chemex is how simple it is. There are no moving parts, the brewer is also the server, and it is very very easy to clean. It also happens to make *amazing* coffee. I've been using it for about a month now and I'm still dialing in the perfect grind/water temp/pouring method, but even the very first cup was pretty freaking good. One thing that is not simple about this coffee maker is actually making the coffee. It's not hard or anything, and it comes with decent directions (and there are plenty of tutorials on the internet), but it is an involved process. Heating the water, grinding the beans, unfolding the filter just right and rinsing it, then carefully pouring the water over the grounds all takes time and attention. However, for me this is a plus. I like having the little morning ritual to get ready for the day. Speaking of beans, I've learned the hard way that the Chemex really shows the difference between beans roasted a few months ago and beans roasted a few days ago. Get the freshest beans you can! It also turns out that this item is great for making Japanese-style iced coffee. The basic idea is to replace some of the hot water that you would pour over the grounds with ice cubes below. Again, I'm still working on getting the ratios right, but the glass that the Chemex is made from seems to tolerate the extreme temperature differences of 200 degree water and ice cubes without any problems. If you are serious about coffee, or you want a simple device for brewing coffee, and you don't mind having to do a little song and dance to brew, I absolutely recommend a Chemex!

High quality product
The only way I make my coffee. I use it everyday. Better than a coffee maker. No bitter or stale taste that carries over.

Beautiful and easy with one minor flaw
The Chemex makes it easy (and almost fool proof) to brew a great cup of coffee. If you’re just starting out manually brewing coffee at home, I’d say this is the way to go. On the days you just don’t want to experiment With other methods, don’t have enough time, or just want a quick no frills coffee, or need to make a lot of coffee at once, the Chemex is a winner. However, if you take the plunge I suggest purchasing a Chemex with over a 6 cup capacity and possibly without the glass handle. On the 6 cup Chemex with a handle, there is a lip on the pour spout that doesn’t allow me to slowly transfer brewed coffee from the Chemex to a mug without it dribbling around and down the lip, which spills coffee on the mug and counter. A workaround to this is to pour fast and steady. I use another carafe when I brew coffee with a V-60 or Kalita wave and that never happens, slow pour or not (those are also my go-to brew methods with Kalita Wave for the win, which I highly suggest learning and brewing coffee with if you’re brewing any type of premium coffee at home). Since I don’t use the Chemex much, I often forget to pour fast so I’m cleaning up coffee off my mug and counter almost every time. It’s a small gripe and price to pay for a beautiful and easy brew method, but it’s a nuisance enough to warrant inclusion in this review. Go big and purchase the original design if you can. I purchased the one with the handle because I test drove the original Chemex 10-cup capacity (which is stunning as well and does not dribble coffee on the counter) but it is bottom heavy and doesn’t include a handle which made me feel like I would break it.

Worth the price every time
I always hesitated to buy the original Chemex mainly because I have small hands and the size of the carafe made it hard to pour. I love this version with the glass handle. It feels solid and substantial in my hand, not delicate like an older off-brand carafe I had prior. Not to mention it's beautiful and makes great coffee! You will never go wrong with Chemex.

Le must
