This book is designed as a primer for practical NASTRAN Finite Element Modeling that can serve as a learning tool and reference guide for finite element users. The approach herein is to provide step-by-step instructions where the author leads the reader through the creation of various simple NASTRAN finite element models that simulate practical structures and structural elements, where each of the required inputs are explained, and where the results of those models are explored and explained and compared to hand classical analysis results for verification. The focus of the book is to provide a framework of experience using simple elements that can be verified easily by hand to ensure that the element input and output are understood and properly used. The structural models explored herein will provide the reader with experience running linear and nonlinear solutions, such that the reader can accurately model & evaluate structures for static load, for nonlinear effects such as gaps and both geometric and material non-linearity, and for buckling. In the process, the reader will gain expertise that will enable them to evaluate many simple structures after a few minutes of model creation by hand, to investigate issues with larger models that were created & evaluated with pre- and post-processors such as PATRAN and FEMAP, to make changes to these larger models efficiently by making direct changes to the NASTRAN input (.bdf) file, and to post-process results more comprehensively by querying the output (.f06) file. Readers who successfully assimilate this content should be off to a great start at becoming super-users in the field of Finite Element Analysis. Review: Great Tool for Learning NASTRAN! - This book is a great tool for folks who wish to learn NASTRAN. It takes the reader thru the steps to create a simple finite element model, to understand the inputs, outputs, and other key information reported by NASTRAN. It then studies the most common elements, CROD, CBAR, CBEAM, CQUAD4, & CSHEAR in simple finite element models, and teaches the user how to properly define the inputs and to interpret the outputs. It teaches how to perform linear structural analysis, linear buckling analysis, nonlinear gap analysis, and nonlinear material analysis. It also provides an appendix of the most common NASTRAN commands and their usage. Experienced users who have trouble properly interpreting CROD, CBAR, CBEAM, CQUAD4 & CSHEAR data will also find this a valuable resource. Readers are encouraged to leave their own review, and/or to contact the author with ideas for inclusion in the next edition. Review: MSC NASTRAN compatible - The examples of the book are mostly compatible with the MSC NASTRAN program. The Autodesk Inventor NASTRAN version does not have the replication capabilities described in Section A.1.11, which will not allow you to simulate the examples in the book that use it. Overall very organized text, and includes plenty examples to follow along. In combination with the in-person lectures it provides a good guide to complete the homework of the course, as well as problems section of the additional textbook. Thanks Dr. Coburn!

Aerospace student utilizing NASTRAN PRIMER
I wish Dr. Coburn would write a handbook for every engineering topic in this fashion. Many textbooks weave extensive wording with long derivations which can confuse learners and add to an already large workload. NASTRAN Primer has no fat on the bone. It promptly introduces and explains each topic with ease while providing examples to follow along. This book will take a beginner to someone with industry ready skills in no time. I recommend purchasing Dr. Coburn's Aerospace Strength Handbook amongst all of his other reads, they are a goldmine.

Lots of Great Examples and Tips to Avoid Common Pitfalls
This book is a very clear and concise primer into the fundamentals of NASTRAN for simple and fundamental structural problems that will allow you to apply the concepts and lessons in this book to more complex and extensive structural analysis. To top it off, it has excellent examples and covers many common pitfalls that can happen when learning and practicing to write good NASTRAN inputs. Overall, this book is an excellent resource for anyone looking into learning more about Finite Element Analysis.

Clear and Concise Guide
This guide is clearly written and provides a lot of detail regarding NASTRAN's commands, as there is a detailed list of the most commonly used commands in the back. There are many examples showing real life applications and explanations on how NASTRAN computes these problems.

A great book for Nastran beginners
As someone who has never use Nastran before, this book has been a huge help. Plenty of examples and explanations are given, and what each part does is clearly explained or listed.
