Q: does it require filtered water?

I would use distilled water in any appliance like this. Tap water has minerals and they can build up in your steamer and cause stains

Q: Is the brush attachment necessary? What purpose does it serve?

It is i couldn't upload the video but when I'm streaming clothes that had beads or stones..I used the brushes then which made the distance between the steam and fabric good enough to do a better job. Plus it kind of combed the lining of the clothes and straightened the clothes. Its like coming your hair but iys for your clothes 🙂

Q: Does this clean off stains ?

No. It also doesn’t work at all. It’s a terrible and dangerous product. Hot water shoots out of it instead of steam. Don’t buy it.

Q: Has anyone experienced an oily residue inside water container even with distilled water?

Nor for me ,but I'm useing tap water ,still works great ,and drying it after use
