Turkmenistan: Far Flung Places Travel Guide : Proudman, Simon: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Poor - Out of date and hard to navigate Review: The best (and the only dedicated) travel guide for Turkmenistan - After looking at the extremely disappointing new edition of the Lonely Planet guide for Central Asia (which I've reviewed separately), I found this Far Flung Places guide, in a second edition published quite recently (2017), advertised by a couple of vendors on desertcart Marketplace. It's initially rather amateurish-looking and is a bit on the expensive side, but it's packed with useful information about Turkmenistan, presented in an accessible, chatty and sometimes amusing style. It's much better value than the Lonely Planet guide, if like me you are planning to visit Turkmenistan but not any of the other 'Stans.

The best (and the only dedicated) travel guide for Turkmenistan

Not the best guide but the best option
This is the only travel guide I could find about Turkmenistan. I missed in depth information about the sites, like UNESCO sita Nissa south of Ashgabat. But better than other travel guides which combine Turkmenistan with other C.A. Republics. I recommend this book

Excellent guide to Turkmenistan , not lengthy but don’t let that put you off. I researched my trip to Turkmenistan and found this book to be the best of all available resources. Covers Ashgabat and the key places to visit in the regional areas.

Gut, oder sehr gut - denn es ist ja der einzige Reiseführer über dieses Land :-)

I travel a lot - having just visited my 110th UN country. I love Bradt guides but decided to buy Simon’s book for Turkmenistan. It’s just excellent - so well-written and well organized. Hope to pick up some of his other books in the future!

I bought this book as research for a book I'm writing, as sadly, there's not a lot of information about Turkmenistan (even the Wikipedia article is missing cited sources and Google Streetview isn't available). This is a great primer on the country, filled with personal anecdotes, tourist attractions--it really makes it feel like I know what to expect should I ever go. Thanks so much for a great guide. I'll be sure to check out Vanuatu if it's anything like this one. 5 stars.
