Caprica - the complete series [Blu-ray] [French Import]

An underrated gem
After it became clear Caprica was never going to get a satisfactory Blu-ray release, I decided to import the series from France, which seems to be the only place it's available in HD on home video.I'd seen the first nine episodes on Sky One, but as the US Sci-Fi/SyFy/The Sci-Fi Channel split the season in two, I missed the second half of the show. It's the story of Admiral Adama's immigrant family in their poverty-ridden early days on Caprica and their tragic links with the wealthy Greystone family, who create the Cylons about 58 years before the start of Battlestar Galactica. As the first prequel to the revamped 2003 version of Battlestar Galactica, the show has a lot going for it: a great cast giving superb performances, generally excellent effects and the opportunity to understand how the decadent society of the colonies was prone to both vulgarity and criminality leading to its downfall. Caprica is the Galactica equivalent of uncovering the murals in Pompeii!Pacing is the show's big problem. The original pilot (literally) opens with a bang and the fallout from it. But the next several episodes really drag. It's less of a problem in a box set, but was disastrous on a weekly basis. Annoyingly, in the second half of the show's run, things really pick up. Certain supernatural aspects from Galactica return, the Matrix-esque scenes in the virtual world of New Cap City are wild and everything ties together to make a terrific climax for the season, also explaining some perceived inconsistencies with BSG... but by then the show had been cancelled. A second season would have been very good, I think, and the show could have really blossomed. Kudos as ever to Bear McCreary for his mostly-unreleased score. The only other thing to note is that the first episode on the Blu-ray set is the original pilot version, not the broadcast first episode. The differences are minor: there is a little more graphic nudity and violence, certain visuals were changed, such as the Greystone Industries building and a shot establishing Gemenon as Caprica's sister planet. A couple of sequences were reshot for broadcast, but the changes are really slight. As for the discs themselves, the (very attractive) menus are in French only and discs default to French audio, with optional English audio with removable French subtitles. The sound on my TV is absolutely fine, with no one element overpowering the other. The video quality is stunning: it's pin-sharp and colourful when it needs to be and grainy and contrasty in scenes set in New Cap City.I would caution that this release is sourced from 1080i50 broadcast versions. The original version would have been 1080p24. The interlaced transfer is still gorgeous, but is subject to speed-up issues. I can't tell if the audio has been pitch-corrected to compensate. But people in countries where TVs only handle 1080p24 and/or 1080i60 should beware.I very much recommend this release to anyone in the UK who wants an HD version of the series. It has its minor flaws - the 1080i50 issue and the lack of a broadcast version of the first episode - but is more than made up for by the quality of the series. In light of there being no official US or UK release, this is the version of Caprica to buy!

AN OVERLOOKED SCI-FI GEM
One of THE most underrated Science Fiction shows of our time. Criminally overlooked, and more often dismissed out of hand, CAPRICA stands head and shoulders above most of it’s ilk. There is however no denying that there were a few factors that contributed to its demise:• A fanbase expecting BSG Part 2• An overly convoluted Pilot episode• Early season pacing issues• And a channel (SyFy) who despite what they were telling the press at the time, had very little faith in the show behind the scenes and actively sabotaged any chance of its renewal by splitting the series in two and then shifting its time slot numerous times.• It’s also worth noting that SyFy never even bothered to air the final few episodes in America, much to fans chagrin.Fans of the show were [rightfully] p*ssed. The show is solid, has a truly great cast (of particular note are Esai Morales and Polly Walker who give both nuanced and captivating performances), fantastic Production quality, and a truly incredible score by Bear McCreary. There was Battlestar Galactica. There was CAPRICA. Then there was a void of many years before a show came along that would be able to sit with them in the pantheon of truly great Sci-Fi - that being The Expanse. If you love Science Fiction and have never seen this show before, it’s an absolute steal at this price for the entire season in HD (£4:49 as of November 2020). Don’t expect the pace of BSG, you’ll just be setting yourself up for a fall. Experience it for what it is: a fantastic slow-burn Sci-Fi Drama that results in a payoff more than worthy of your time. While the Show-Runners did an admirable job of wrapping it up neatly at its end, it’s highly likely you will join the many others of us who felt so cruelly robbed of a second season when it ends. It still smarts. It will however stand the test of time, and in years to come, it will be given the respect it deserves and will be looked upon as the overlooked classic that it truly is.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yes it's like marmite love it or hate it set's up a pre qual premise but nothing special
So we have Battle star galactica a remake of the classic show which is absolutely fantastic an epic space opera set aboard the Battle star galactica with a powerful enemy the cylon's after them the remaining human's are looking for a place called earth, it ran for four season's and had spin off TV film's When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurfaces and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protects a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony of Earth, this show was utterly fantasic I recommend you watch this before caprica. CAPRICA is a spin-off prequel linked to Battle star because it show's the creation of the Cylon's who are artificial intelligent beings in metal bodies, the pacing of the show and it's premise is tenuously linked to it's predecessor leading to many fan's either loving this show or hating it, I like it but be warned your only getting one season as the show was then cancelled due to low ratings. personally I believe the first cylon war would have been a better choice and this was shown in the miniseries Blood & Chrome which was shown as a mini web series now available as a movie if they made that a full series BSG universe may have survived a little longer. on a completely side note did I here write or is a network in America making another star trek series sign me up. I will just have to console myself by watching BSG again hard times for SCI FI fan's even defiance seam's to have ended oh but star wars, then again where's the shows like star trek, far space, stargate, BSG, firefly so on nothing in that regards, this show will not console even hard-core BSG fan's, something to keep us entertained weekly not just once in a blue moon.
