Q: What keeps small seeds like thistle from falling out the feeding ports on the sides?

I wouldn't recommend thistle seeds. The screen is pretty small. I would use larger wild bird seed. You would be amazed at how many birds are attracted to this feeder.

Q: Type of seeds this holds?

I typically mix sunflower seed and songbird seed in mine. The color is very bright and has not faded at all. I did add a clump to make it longer so the squirrels can't get to it.

Q: Does the top twist to lock. If not, the squirrels just push the top open.

No but you have to push in button to release top to open. We hang ours on PVC pipe about 7 feet up with wood going across it at top and hang over wood..hard to describe and has to be certain diameter so squirrels can'take get up it at all.

Q: Do house sparrows feed on it ?

In my experience, only the house finches and goldfinches (American and Lesser) feed on it. For some reason the House Sparrows don't seem interested.
